NVIDIA is reportedly preparing a refreshed GeForce RTX 5080 with 24 GB of GDDR7 memory for the first quarter of 2027, potentially positioning it as the highest end Blackwell gaming card if the current RTX 5090 is discontinued.
The information remains unconfirmed. NVIDIA has not officially announced a new RTX 5080, nor has it confirmed reports that production of the existing RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 is ending.
According to the latest report, NVIDIA intends for the 24 GB RTX 5080 to replace the existing 16 GB model.
RTX 5080 Could Move From 16 GB to 24 GB
The current RTX 5080 carries 16 GB of GDDR7 memory using eight 2 GB memory modules.
A move to 24 GB could therefore be achieved with eight newer 3 GB GDDR7 chips while retaining the same basic memory configuration.
That would provide a 50% increase in VRAM capacity without necessarily requiring a wider memory bus.
| Specification | Current RTX 5080 | Rumored RTX 5080 |
|---|---|---|
| VRAM | 16 GB | 24 GB |
| Memory type | GDDR7 | GDDR7 |
| Likely module capacity | 2 GB | 3 GB |
| Number of memory modules | 8 | Likely 8 |
| Expected launch | Available now | Q1 2027 |
| Officially confirmed | Yes | No |
Details beyond memory capacity are unclear.
There is currently no reliable information confirming whether NVIDIA will change CUDA core counts, clock speeds, power limits or other specifications.
Board Partners Reportedly Know a New Model Is Coming
The report claims NVIDIA has already informed its board partners about the upcoming 24 GB RTX 5080.
However, partners reportedly have little information about the card's actual development specifications.
That leaves open the possibility that NVIDIA is still finalizing the design or that the company is limiting early information while preparing the refreshed model.
The lack of detailed partner information also means claims about performance improvements should be treated cautiously.
At this stage, the additional memory is the main reported change.
The Card May Have Started as an RTX 5080 Super
One possibility is that the 24 GB model originated as part of NVIDIA's rumored RTX 50 Super refresh.
Previous speculation suggested refreshed Blackwell cards could use higher capacity GDDR7 modules to increase VRAM without redesigning the full memory subsystem.
However, memory supply and allocation challenges have reportedly complicated those plans.
The 24 GB card could therefore arrive simply as a revised RTX 5080 instead of carrying an RTX 5080 Super name.
That remains speculation rather than confirmed branding.
RTX 5090 Discontinuation Is Still a Rumor
Reports have also suggested that NVIDIA may discontinue the RTX 5090 and redirect some of its highest end Blackwell silicon toward professional products.

If that happens, a refreshed RTX 5080 could become NVIDIA's top GeForce gaming card.
However, NVIDIA has not confirmed the discontinuation of either the RTX 5090 or the current RTX 5080.
Until the company provides an official product roadmap, the idea of the 24 GB RTX 5080 becoming Blackwell's new gaming flagship remains dependent on several unverified reports.
Pricing Could Be Significantly Higher
The larger VRAM configuration is unlikely to make the new card cheaper.
Higher capacity 3 GB GDDR7 modules are expected to cost more than the 2 GB chips used in the existing RTX 5080, particularly while memory supply remains under pressure.
The report suggests the card could approach $2,000 when it reaches the market, although no official MSRP has been provided.
That figure should therefore be treated as an estimate rather than a confirmed price.
A launch around that level would place the refreshed RTX 5080 far above the original pricing position of the 16 GB model and could reflect the broader increase in memory and graphics hardware costs.
For now, the main claim is that NVIDIA is targeting Q1 2027 for a 24 GB RTX 5080. Whether the card arrives as a simple memory refresh, a renamed Super model or the new top GeForce Blackwell product has yet to be confirmed.
