Nvidia retires Control Panel after 20 years as Nvidia App becomes the main driver tool

Nvidia is officially retiring the classic Nvidia Control Panel after 20 years, marking the end of one of the most familiar tools for GeForce graphics card owners. The change arrived with Nvidia’s Game Ready Driver 610.47, which adds support for new games and includes bug fixes, but the bigger shift is that new drivers will no longer carry the old Control Panel by default.

The company says the move is happening because supported Control Panel features for GeForce players have now been moved into the newer Nvidia App. That app was introduced in 2024 as a more modern hub that combines several Nvidia tools in one place, including parts of GeForce Experience and the classic Control Panel experience.

Clean driver installs will remove the old Control Panel, but existing installs can still keep using it

The change does not mean the Nvidia Control Panel will immediately disappear from every PC. If you already have it installed, you can keep using it for now. However, if you perform a clean installation of Nvidia’s newer drivers, the Control Panel will be removed from the system. That also means the familiar desktop right click shortcut will disappear.

Nvidia says the Control Panel will still be available through the Microsoft Store as an optional download. However, the current version will no longer receive new features or bug fixes. In practical terms, it is being kept around for people who still want access to it, but it is no longer the tool Nvidia wants GeForce owners to use going forward.

The situation is slightly different for Nvidia RTX PRO customers. Nvidia says the classic Control Panel will remain supported for professional customers until the company finishes moving professional features into the Nvidia App.

For many PC players, this change will feel overdue. The Nvidia Control Panel has been useful for years, but its interface has looked dated compared with modern Windows apps. The Nvidia App gives the company a cleaner place to manage display settings, graphics features, driver updates, and other GPU tools.

Nvidia also says the newer app runs faster and more efficiently. More important, it now includes the modern Control Panel functions available for GeForce RTX GPUs, along with extra features that were never part of the old tool.

Still, the retirement may take some getting used to. The Control Panel has been part of Nvidia driver installs for so long that many PC gamers know exactly where to find settings such as 3D options, display configuration, scaling, and refresh rate controls. Moving everything into Nvidia App changes that routine.

The message is clear: Nvidia is done treating the Control Panel as its main graphics settings tool. It is not being erased overnight, but its active life is over. Going forward, Nvidia App is the default place for GeForce owners to manage their GPU settings and driver experience.
