Nintendo Switch 2 Adds Docked VRR Support With System Update 23.0.0

Nintendo has added variable refresh rate support to the Switch 2 while the console is connected to a TV or monitor through its dock.

The feature arrives with Switch 2 System Update 23.0.0 and allows compatible games to synchronize their frame rate with the refresh rate of a supported display. This can reduce visible screen tearing and judder when performance changes during gameplay.

There is an important limitation at launch. Docked VRR appears to work only with games that have been specifically enabled for the feature, rather than applying automatically across the entire Switch 2 library.

Docked VRR requires supported games and displays

Nintendo says VRR output is now supported in TV mode when both the game and connected display support the feature.

That means the console, game software, and TV or monitor all need to meet the requirements.

VRR works by allowing the display to adjust its refresh rate to match the frame delivery of the console. When a game cannot maintain a perfectly fixed frame rate, this synchronization can produce smoother motion and reduce visual artifacts.

The Switch 2 already supported VRR while being used as a handheld. Update 23.0.0 extends that capability to docked play.

Support appears to use a game whitelist

The biggest restriction is that docked VRR does not appear to operate as a universal system feature.

Current information suggests games need to be specifically flagged as compatible. This means older titles may require updates before they can use VRR in TV mode.

That differs from the approach available on some competing consoles, where VRR can sometimes be applied to games even when they do not include native support.

At the time covered by the announcement, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour was the only confirmed game updated to support docked VRR.

It is not yet clear how quickly other developers will be able to add support or whether Nintendo requires a separate certification process before a game can be enabled.

Nintendo had previously mentioned docked VRR

Docked VRR had been expected before the Switch 2 launched.

Nintendo previously listed VRR support for the docked console on its regional website, but that wording was later removed.

The hardware capability therefore appeared to exist before the software implementation became available.

System Update 23.0.0 now formally enables the feature, although its usefulness will depend on how many games receive compatible updates.

Update 23.0.0 includes several other changes

The new Switch 2 system software also adds features beyond VRR.

A complete system transfer option now allows data to be moved from one Switch 2 console to another.

Nintendo has also added a quicker toggle for Switch 2 Boost, reducing the need to enter the full System Settings menu to change the option.

Accessibility support has been improved, while the Mii editor now includes background music that can be disabled.

The update also contains interface changes, general optimizations, and unspecified bug fixes.

Game support will determine how useful docked VRR becomes

The addition of VRR in TV mode addresses one of the notable differences between handheld and docked Switch 2 operation.

However, the current game specific implementation means the feature will not immediately improve every title on the system.

For now, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour is the first confirmed example. Wider benefits will depend on Nintendo and third party developers adding support to more games after System Update 23.0.0.
