Nintendo may be preparing a full Ocarina of Time remake for Zelda’s 40th anniversary

Nintendo is reportedly working on a full remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2. The project is said to rebuild the original game from scratch rather than simply remaster the old version.

The rumor comes from leaker Nash Weedle, who shared new details during the Attack The Backlog podcast. According to the claim, the project has been in some form of development since at least 2022, when the studio was reportedly hiring creative and artistic leads.

This could be a high budget Zelda remake

The report says Nintendo is treating the Ocarina of Time remake as a high budget project. The developers are reportedly experimenting with the art direction, though there is no firm detail yet on whether it will follow the look of the original game, move closer to modern Zelda, or use a different visual style.

Monolith Soft may also be involved. The studio is best known for Xenoblade Chronicles, but it also helped with Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. If true, that would make sense for a large Zelda project because Monolith Soft has strong experience with big world design and technical support.

Anniversary timingZelda’s 40th anniversary and 2027 live action movie

The timing fits a larger Zelda push. The franchise turns 40 in 2026, and Nintendo also has a live action Zelda movie planned for May 2027. A major remake and a new 2D Zelda game would give Nintendo a strong way to celebrate the series across different types of fans.

The second rumored project is said to be an original 2D Zelda game built with the Echoes of Wisdom engine. That could let Nintendo release something new without needing the same development scale as a full 3D remake.

For now, this is still a rumor. Nintendo has not announced an Ocarina of Time remake, and details could change even if the project is real. Still, the idea is believable because Ocarina of Time remains one of the most important games in Nintendo’s history, and a full remake would be a major Switch 2 seller.

If the rumor is accurate, the next Nintendo Direct could be the place where the remake is revealed. A late 2026 launch would line up well with the anniversary, while also giving Nintendo a major Zelda release before the movie arrives in 2027.
