Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance will move the story several years beyond the events of the base game while introducing new monsters, returning Elder Dragons, and a floating island region called the Skybound Eyrie.
The expansion is scheduled to launch in 2027 for Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
Its story begins after the main cast has spent years constructing a fortress in preparation for the possible return of Lao Shan Lung, the enormous Elder Dragon that nearly destroyed them in the past.
At the same time, unusual changes begin spreading through the Forbidden Lands, pushing the hunter into a new investigation.

Skybound Eyrie Introduces Floating Islands
One of the major new locations is the Skybound Eyrie, a region made up of islands suspended in the air.
The hunter is sent there while investigating changes affecting the wider ecosystem of the Forbidden Lands.
A central mystery is why the area appears to defy gravity.
That gives the expansion a different environmental focus from the base game and provides a new setting for hunting, exploration, and story missions.
The region is also tied closely to the new monsters introduced in Ascendance.
Lao Shan Lung Returns After the Time Skip
The expansion brings back Lao Shan Lung, one of the series' enormous Elder Dragons.
The story establishes that the characters have spent years preparing defenses in case the creature returns.
Its presence appears to be one of the main reasons the new fortress was constructed.
Kushala Daora is also returning.

The wind controlling Elder Dragon has appeared in several previous Monster Hunter games and will join Ascendance's roster alongside new creatures.
Guardian Monsters from Monster Hunter Wilds will also continue to play a role. These artificially created creatures are now spreading into regions from the base game, adding another source of instability to the ecosystem.
Araketa and Gundoraja Expand the Monster Roster
Ascendance introduces several original monsters.
Araketa is a new Bird Wyvern capable of flying at very high speed, with movements compared to a jet.
Its aerial mobility should create a different type of encounter from many ground focused hunts.
Gundoraja is a new serpentine Elder Dragon with the ability to control storm clouds.
The creature can manipulate lightning and severe weather, suggesting that its battles will rely heavily on environmental hazards and electrical attacks.
Both monsters help establish the new region as more than a simple extension of existing areas.
A New Creature Has One of the Strangest Designs
Another newly revealed monster has not yet been given a public name.
The creature resembles a lizard but behaves in a much more disturbing way.
It feeds on other monsters from the inside and can alter its body into huge mouth like structures capable of swallowing prey.
Its exact role in the story remains unclear.
It could be connected to the unusual ecosystem changes the hunter is investigating, but that has not been confirmed.
Ascendance Is Expanding More Than Combat
Capcom has already been showing how the new Boost Bracer mechanic changes the game's 14 weapon types, including major upgrades for Dual Blades and Bow.
The newer story trailer makes it clear that Ascendance is also expanding the narrative, monster roster, and world design.
The multi year time skip gives the expansion room to show how characters and settlements have changed since the base game.
The returning Elder Dragons add familiar threats, while the Skybound Eyrie and new monsters create a separate identity for the expansion.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is currently planned for 2027, with more details about its hunts, story, and new systems expected before launch.
