Bungie is preparing a major reset for Marathon when Season 2 begins on June 2, 2026. The update will wipe player Vaults, add new content, and introduce experimental queues, including a PvE only mode for players who want a less punishing way to experience the extraction shooter.
Game director Joe Ziegler shared a detailed reflection on Marathon’s first season, including what worked, what did not, and where Bungie wants to take the game next. He admitted that Marathon can be difficult to get into, especially for new players. Even after players understand the basics, the game can still create a harsh loop where repeated losses push people away.
That is a serious issue for a live service game. Marathon launched with a strong hardcore identity, built around risk, survival, and player tension. But Bungie now appears to be broadening the experience so the game can hold a larger audience over time.
Season 2 will add two PvE focused experimental modes. The first will lean more toward PvE while still keeping a small amount of PvP. The second will be fully PvE, with crews working together to complete objectives and make progress across matches.
| Season 2 change | What it means |
|---|---|
| Full Vault wipe | Player inventories reset with the new season |
| PvE focused experimental mode | More enemy and objective based play with light PvP |
| PvE only experimental mode | Crews complete objectives together without PvP pressure |
| Night Marsh | A new challenge layer for the game |
| Sentinel shell | A new defensive Runner shell |
| New weapons and equipment | More tools for different playstyles |
| Faster progression | Faction and Runner leveling should move quicker |
| Cradle changes | More options for acquiring Runner shell stats |
Bungie is also looking at bigger systems beyond Season 2. Ziegler said the team is exploring changes to contracts, priority contracts, matchmaking, Vault size, onboarding, and the possible return of Duos as a rotating queue. Some of those updates may not arrive until Season 3.
The PvE only mode is the most important signal. It shows Bungie understands that Marathon’s current shape may be too narrow if it wants long term growth. A punishing extraction shooter can build a loyal core audience, but it also risks losing players who want the world, weapons, and progression without constant PvP pressure.

The comparison with ARC Raiders has made that problem clearer. Marathon has been seen as the more hardcore option, while ARC Raiders has been viewed as more approachable. Bungie now seems ready to test whether Marathon can keep its survival identity while giving different types of players more ways to stay invested.
Season 2 will be a major test for the game. The reset gives Bungie a chance to reshape Marathon before more players leave, while the PvE experiments could help the game find a wider audience without fully abandoning its original direction.
