Marathon Season 2 brings a new progression system, Night Marsh map, and Sentinel Runner Shell

Bungie is preparing a major refresh for Marathon with Season 2: Nightfall, which launches on June 2, 2026. The update brings a new map, a reworked progression system, a new Runner Shell, clearer implant and mod communication, new weapons, larger Vault space, and changes to Contracts. It looks like Bungie is trying to reduce friction after Season 1 and give players more reasons to keep extracting, looting, and improving their builds.

The biggest change is the new progression system called The Cradle. Instead of treating unwanted loot mainly as something to sell for credits, players will be able to convert weapons, implants, mods, and other valuable items into Energy. That Energy can then be spent across six stats, giving players a more permanent way to grow throughout the season.

The system also gives players more flexibility. You can invest heavily into one stat early in the season, then reset and spend your points elsewhere if your build is not working. That should make experimentation easier and reduce the feeling that early choices lock you into one path.

The Cradle could make every Marathon run feel more useful

The Cradle matters because extraction games need every run to feel meaningful, even when you do not find your ideal gear. If duplicate or unwanted loot can now feed long term progression, failed or imperfect runs may feel less wasteful. That is important for Marathon because losing gear is part of the risk, but players still need to feel that their time is moving them forward.

Bungie is also changing how implants are shown to players. Starting with Season 2, implants will be defined by their perk first and will have fixed stats. Their names will also reflect those perks more clearly. This should make it easier to understand what you are picking up during a run or equipping before one.

Contracts are also being adjusted. Priority Contracts will no longer be locked behind Faction Reputation levels, which should make them easier to access. Bungie is also cutting down on more annoying contract types, including objectives that force players to cross the map multiple times in one run.

The new Sentinel Runner Shell is built around defense and area control. Its Snare Mine can help stop enemy teams from closing distance too quickly, while its Defender System is meant to protect against grenade pressure. Sentinel can also play offense through Prey Tracker, which activates radar to reveal nearby moving targets.

Season 2 also adds two new weapons: the KKV 9SD SMG and the D54 Battle Pistol. Both appear to be focused on close range combat against other Runners and UESC units, which should fit the tighter, faster fights Marathon often creates.

The Night Marsh map gives Season 2 its main new location, while experimental PvE queues are also planned for later in the season. Bungie has not shared the full details of those PvE queues yet, but the mode could help Marathon reach players who like its world and gunplay but do not always want a full PvPvE extraction experience.

Season 2 arrives at an important time for Bungie. With Destiny 2 approaching its final major content drop, Marathon is becoming the studio’s central focus. Nightfall needs to show that Bungie can respond to feedback, clean up rough systems, and give players a stronger reason to return. Based on the announced changes, Season 2 looks like a serious attempt to do exactly that.
