Kingdom Hearts IV Is Still on Track for 2027 as Square Enix Rules Out a Delay

Kingdom Hearts IV is still scheduled to launch in 2027, with the game’s senior developers directly addressing concerns that it could slip into 2028.

The reassurance came after Square Enix and Disney confirmed a late 2027 release window for the game on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Series director Tetsuya Nomura and co director Tai Yasue both said development is progressing smoothly and that the current schedule remains firm.

Developers say the 2027 release window is secure

Yasue said the team is confident Kingdom Hearts IV will arrive in 2027 and described development as being fully on schedule.

Nomura also addressed speculation that the game could still be delayed, stating clearly that this is not expected to happen.

The confidence from both developers is notable because large RPG projects often face schedule changes during development.

For now, however, Square Enix is presenting Kingdom Hearts IV as a firm 2027 release.

Square Enix has a busy RPG schedule for 2027

Kingdom Hearts IV is expected to arrive later in the year, while Final Fantasy VII Revelation is planned for spring 2027.

That gives Square Enix two major role playing releases in the same calendar year.

The spacing also suggests the company is trying to avoid placing both games too close together.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is expected to occupy the first half of the year, leaving Kingdom Hearts IV positioned as one of Square Enix’s major releases for the later months.

A new world will revisit an old Kingdom Hearts III idea

Nomura also shared a small new detail about the game’s world design.

He confirmed that one concept originally considered for Kingdom Hearts III is finally being used in Kingdom Hearts IV.

The idea apparently proved too difficult to realize in the previous game, but the team continued developing it and has now evolved it into a world for the new entry.

Nomura suggested that the concept is unusual because it is not tied as closely to recreating a specific movie.

That gives the developers more creative freedom compared with worlds that need to closely match an existing Disney setting.

He did not identify the world directly, so its exact theme remains unknown.

Mickey, Donald and Goofy will have larger roles

Kingdom Hearts IV is also expanding the role of familiar series characters.

Recent footage has shown Mickey, Donald, and Goofy as playable characters, which represents a notable change from previous entries.

The series has traditionally centered heavily on Sora, with Donald and Goofy acting as companions for much of the journey.

Giving these characters direct playable sections could provide more variety in combat and storytelling.

Square Enix has not yet explained how frequently players will control them or how their gameplay will differ from Sora.

More details are still being kept under wraps

Despite the stronger release commitment, Square Enix is still keeping much of Kingdom Hearts IV secret.

The full list of Disney worlds has not been revealed, and the developers have not explained how the new playable characters will fit into the broader structure.

The story direction also remains largely unknown.

What is clear is that the project appears to be much closer to completion than it was when first announced.

The latest comments from Nomura and Yasue are meant to remove uncertainty around the schedule and reassure fans that the game is not drifting into another year.

Unless plans change unexpectedly, Kingdom Hearts IV is set to arrive in late 2027 across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
