Infinity Ward says Modern Warfare 4 is built around a clearer identity after Black Ops 7

Infinity Ward says Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is being shaped around a clear identity, with grounded combat, a South Korean setting, improved weapon feel, and systems that are meant to separate it from the faster Black Ops games. The studio discussed those goals in a new interview focused on multiplayer design, where developers explained how Modern Warfare 4 is trying to feel familiar without copying every recent Call of Duty idea.

That matters because Call of Duty has had a turbulent couple of years. Black Ops 6 launched with strong momentum in 2024, helped by its omnimovement system and fast gunplay, but later struggled with cheating problems and delayed content updates. Black Ops 7 then divided the community again with its sequel approach, campaign direction, and the debate around Carry Forward content.

Modern Warfare 4 arrives after that uneven period, and Infinity Ward appears focused on giving its own subseries a more defined tone. Technical designer Jack Hoppus said the team wants players to feel the game’s identity as soon as they get their hands on it.

Modern Warfare 4 keeps some movement ideas but drops wall jumping for grounded combat

The biggest design difference is movement. Modern Warfare 4 does not abandon newer Call of Duty movement entirely, but it removes wall jumping and leans into a slower boots on the ground feel. Infinity Ward says the question behind every feature is whether it fits a grounded military experience.

Some ideas from recent games remain. Sliding benefits from newer animation work, mantling has been improved, and players can use features such as dynamic leaning and ledge crawling. The goal is to make movement easy for new players while still giving experienced players room to master it.

Infinity Ward is also putting more work into environmental detail. Multiplayer design lead Jacky Reynolds said the team wants multiplayer maps to feel like they exist close to campaign missions, almost as if another operation is happening nearby. For South Korean maps, the team focused on small details such as road markings, local props, newspaper stands, textures, and architecture to make the world feel more believable.

The studio is also using the shared Call of Duty Engine to push new ideas, including dynamic weather and more complex map technology. One example is Kill Block, a dynamic multiplayer map inspired by stadiums with retractable surfaces. The map changes through different slab layouts, creating many possible variations.

Weapons are another major focus. Infinity Ward says it has reworked aiming, depth of field, and gun feel to make weapons feel heavier and more realistic. The Gunsmith returns with more than 500 attachments, but the system is being made easier to understand. Players can choose up to five attachments, with clearer explanations of what each one changes.

The new Gunny system is meant to help players who feel overwhelmed. It can generate a usable weapon build from your unlocked attachments during or outside a match. Players can then edit the generated build instead of being locked into it.

Modern Warfare 4 is also notable because it skips Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but still launches on Nintendo Switch 2. Infinity Ward says getting the game to feel quick and responsive on Switch 2 was a challenge, but the team says the result feels natural.

The game is expected to launch in fall 2026 on Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. It will support Xbox Play Anywhere at launch, but it will not arrive on Xbox Game Pass until 2027.
