Before pairing, identify which type of Roku remote you have. The process is completely different for each type, and attempting the wrong method wastes time.
Voice remotes use Wi-Fi Direct and must be paired to the Roku device. They have a small circular pairing button inside the battery compartment or on the back of the remote. Most remotes included with Roku devices from 2017 onward are voice remotes.
Simple IR remotes use infrared and do not require pairing at all. They work immediately as long as they have batteries and a direct line of sight to the Roku. If you have one of these and it is not working, the issue is batteries or obstruction, not pairing.
To confirm which you have, open the battery cover. If there is a small button inside, it is a voice remote. If you see only batteries with no button, it is an IR remote.
Pairing a Voice Remote With a Pairing Button
Step 1: Power On Your Roku Device
Make sure the Roku device is powered on and showing the home screen or setup screen on your TV. Keep the remote within three metres of the Roku device during pairing.
Step 2: Insert Fresh Batteries
Remove the battery cover and insert two AA batteries. Fresh batteries prevent pairing failures caused by low power.
Step 3: Press and Hold the Pairing Button
With the battery cover still open, press and hold the small circular pairing button inside the battery compartment for three to five seconds. A green or purple status light begins flashing on the remote. This indicates the remote is in pairing mode and broadcasting its signal.
Step 4: Wait for Confirmation
The Roku device detects the remote automatically. An on-screen message appears confirming the remote has been paired. The status light on the remote stops flashing once the pairing is complete.
Test the remote by pressing the Home button. If the Roku home screen responds, pairing was successful.
Pairing a Voice Remote Without a Pairing Button
Some Roku remotes, particularly newer models, removed the physical pairing button. Use the button combination method instead.
Step 1: Make Sure Roku Is On
Power on the Roku device and wait for the home screen to appear.
Step 2: Hold Back and Home Simultaneously
Press and hold the Back button and the Home button at the same time for five seconds. The status light on the remote flashes to indicate pairing mode. The Roku device detects the remote and confirms pairing on screen.
Pairing Through the Settings Menu
Use this method when adding a second remote to a Roku device that already has a working remote, or when pairing a replacement remote without a physical pairing button.
Using a working remote or the Roku mobile app, press the Home button. Go to Settings, then Remotes and devices, then Add devices, then Remote. Follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, press the pairing button on the new remote or use the Back and Home combination. The Roku device pairs with the new remote automatically.
Using the Roku Mobile App as a Temporary Remote
If you have no working remote at all, the Roku mobile app lets you navigate the device from your phone.
Download the free Roku app from the App Store on iPhone or Google Play on Android. Connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the Roku device. Open the app and tap the Remote icon at the bottom. The app detects the Roku device and works as a full remote. From the app, navigate to Settings, Remotes and devices, Add devices, Remote to pair a physical remote.
Fixing Pairing That Will Not Work
Restart the Roku device. Unplug the power cable, wait ten seconds, and plug it back in. Once the home screen appears, attempt pairing again. This resolves the majority of failed pairing attempts.
Replace the batteries. Low battery power is a common cause of pairing failure that is easy to overlook.
Move closer to the device. Stay within three metres during the initial pairing handshake. Once paired, the working range extends significantly.
Check for interference. Other wireless devices, particularly routers and Bluetooth speakers placed directly next to the Roku, can interfere with pairing. Move them further away temporarily.
Check firmware. Outdated Roku firmware occasionally causes pairing issues. Navigate to Settings, System, System update, Check now using the mobile app if you have no physical remote.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to re-pair my Roku remote after a factory reset?
Yes. A factory reset wipes all pairing memory on the Roku device. After the reset, the device returns to its initial setup state and you need to pair the remote again using the pairing button method. The same applies when setting up a used Roku device you purchased from someone else.
Can I use one Roku remote with multiple Roku devices?
A Roku voice remote pairs to a specific Roku device and controls only that device. It does not automatically switch between multiple Rokus in your home. You can re-pair it to a different device by following the pairing steps, but doing so removes it from the previous device.
Why does my Roku remote pair successfully but then stop working after a few minutes?
This usually indicates weak or dying batteries. Replace them with fresh AA batteries even if the remote showed enough power to complete the initial pairing handshake. Interference from nearby electronics can also cause the connection to drop intermittently after pairing.
