Helldivers 2 Drew 1,667 Negative Steam Reviews the Day Easy Anti-Cheat Landed, Up From 19

Helldivers 2 collected 1,667 negative Steam reviews on October 20. The day before, it collected 19.

October 20 is the day Arrowhead Game Studios swapped the game's GameGuard anti-cheat for Easy Anti-Cheat. Those daily counts come from Valve's own review histogram, not from a third-party tally.

The recent Steam score now reads Mostly Negative, at 36 percent of 10,113 reviews over the last 30 days. The all-time score is still Mostly Positive, at 79 percent of 641,775 reviews.

What Valve's daily review counts show

Valve publishes a positive and a negative count for every day. For Helldivers 2, the break is abrupt.

October 17, 18 and 19 drew 19, 25 and 19 negative reviews in turn. October 20 drew 1,667.

October 21 drew 1,282, and the daily negative count has not fallen below 226 since.

Split at the switch, the first 19 days drew 2,540 reviews at 86.3 percent positive. The days from October 20 onward drew 7,588 at 19.8 percent.

October now stands at 36.5 percent positive overall. That is the game's worst month since May 2024, when the PlayStation Network account requirement pushed it to 33.4 percent.

Timing is not cause, and Valve publishes no breakdown of reasons. Arrowhead also shipped a premium Warbond and a weapon balance pass in the same October 20 patch, so three changes landed together.

Arrowhead never promised mod support

The studio's announcement that day is the first time it has set out any position on modding. "We haven't previously commented on modding, other than to warn that from a technical perspective, we can't guarantee their safety or usability for players," the post reads.

That distinction matters. Helldivers 2 never offered official mod support, so this is a studio tightening an unsupported practice rather than withdrawing a promised feature.

Arrowhead says it appreciates the creativity behind cosmetic and non-gameplay mods. Its stated target is modifications that create unfair advantages or affect other players in a lobby.

On the damage itself, the studio says some mods "may no longer function". Some non-malicious cosmetic mods, it adds, "may require updates from their individual creators in order to keep working".

The reason given for the switch is blunt. Arrowhead says the GameGuard implementation "wasn't as effective as it could have been", and calls Easy Anti-Cheat an industry standard used in over 200 games.

The studio said last week that Helldivers 3 is not planned and that work stays on Helldivers 2. The health of this game is the whole roadmap.

What Easy Anti-Cheat actually blocks

Breaking mods can mean several different things. Easy Anti-Cheat's own support documentation separates them.

Its answer on modding tools says many of them modify game files or inject code into the running game process. Anti-cheat systems block those methods because cheats use the same ones.

Those are two distinct checks. The documented "Unknown file version" error fires when the service detects that a game file has been modified and does not match the expected state.

The second check blocks code injection into the live process. Easy Anti-Cheat says that block is not permanent and only applies while the game is running.

The kernel driver is a third thing, and it is not what stops a texture swap. Easy Anti-Cheat says the driver loads only when a protected game launches, and does not run at boot or in the background.

That split explains Arrowhead's wording. A cosmetic mod that replaces a file trips the integrity check and can be repackaged, while a script mod that hooks the running process does what the system exists to stop.

Easy Anti-Cheat's documentation notes that some games ship a separate mod-enabled mode with protection switched off. Helldivers 2 publishes no such mode, while other studios have moved the other way with curated console mod support in Cyberpunk 2077.

Not every complaint is about mods

Mod breakage is not the whole of the backlash. Of the ten most recent negative reviews Steam displayed on October 30, six named the anti-cheat change and three mentioned mods.

Four reported the game crashing or failing to run at all. One review from the switch day says Easy Anti-Cheat blocked the game on an install with no mods on it.

That player says the fix was running the old GameGuard uninstaller as an administrator. Another review reads, "Game broken now even unmodded".

Those are player reports and nothing more, and Arrowhead has acknowledged no launch failures. Its October 20 post says Steam Deck and Linux compatibility is unchanged, with no new hardware requirements.

That claim is worth watching, given how often kernel drivers need separate anti-cheat compatibility work on Linux.

What Arrowhead has not published since

Ten days on, the silence is measurable. The word modding appears exactly once across the last 150 posts in the game's Steam news feed, in that October 20 announcement.

Two patches have shipped since the reviews turned. The October 22 hotfix carried one crash fix, and the October 29 patch adjusted two stratagems, corrected a shotgun damage value and removed two music tracks.

Neither mentions mods or anti-cheat. Arrowhead has published no count of affected mods, no list of what is blocked and no timeline for restoring anything.

The only route offered is a support ticket for players who believe a non-destructive mod is being blocked. Review scores can also move back as fast as they moved on October 20.
