CD Projekt Red is switching on mods for Cyberpunk 2077 console players on Thursday, October 22, and the catch sits in the save file. The studio's own patch notes say achievements and trophies cannot be earned while playing on console from a modded save.

The feature arrives with Update 2.5, the Edgerunners 2 Update, and it is not an open modding free-for-all. CD Projekt Red calls it a first step into cross-platform modding, serving a selection of player-created mods through the in-game menu.
What Update 2.5 actually turns on
Mod support is listed for PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. It runs on mod.io, the same platform behind console mods in The Witcher 3.
The update lands on October 22 for PC, the Steam, GOG and Epic builds on Mac, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to the patch notes. Nintendo Switch 2 and the Mac App Store build follow in the days after, with no date given.
No release time and no time zone have been published for October 22. Blizzard says the game reaches Battle.net on Tuesday, November 10, with this free update included, two months after the storefront deal was announced.
Installing is meant to be quick. CD Projekt Red said on its own stream that the mod menu sits on the main menu of the game. A single download button installs a mod, and mods can be switched on and off at will.

The catalogue is curated, not open
The word selection is doing real work in that patch note. The studio said on the stream that there is a whole curation procedure behind the list, with its QA team involved in checking the mods that get added.
Everything in that panel should really work, it said. Still, it warned that installing too many mods at once can destabilize the game in crazy ways.
The menu can be searched for adult mods, by the studio's own description. More mods will become available over time, the patch notes say, and the launch catalogue was built with modders CD Projekt Red worked with directly.
Modded console saves give up achievements
Saves made with mods enabled are marked with a dedicated icon in the Load Game menu. On console, those saves cannot earn achievements or trophies.
That is the trade the feature asks for, and it is not a Cyberpunk quirk. CD Projekt Red applies the same rule to The Witcher 3, where console trophies and achievements are switched off on modded saves.
Paid mods are not on the table either. The studio's Fan Content Guidelines rule out commercial use of its games and say fan content cannot sit behind any sort of paywall, although reasonable donations are allowed.
Why The Witcher 3 keeps coming up
The comparison comes from CD Projekt Red itself, not from outside the studio. Asked on its own stream whether the menu resembles the one in The Witcher, it said the menu does have some similarities.
It is styled to fit Cyberpunk, but the thinking behind it was the same, and the stated aim was consistency. Anyone who has used mods in The Witcher 3, remastered at the end of September, should find the new menu familiar.
The studio's support pages back that up. The Witcher 3 uses the same mod.io-powered menu on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, with the same modded save icon and the same console trophy block.
The rest of Update 2.5 leans on the anime. It adds a Clampdown side quest set before the events of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, a HKGN 102.0 FM radio station, five outfit sets and a console field of view slider.
What is still unknown
Several figures are missing. CD Projekt Red has not published a mod file size limit, a cap on how many mods can be installed, or how many mods the catalogue holds on day one.
It has conceded that the system still has limitations without naming them, and says more functionality is coming in the weeks ahead. Release dates for Switch 2 and the Mac App Store version remain open.
Previous-generation consoles sit this out entirely. CD Projekt Red's support page says new content and improvements stopped reaching PlayStation 4 and Xbox One after Patch 1.6. Modding therefore starts on hardware that can already push path tracing, if at a cost in resolution.
