Halo Studios reportedly had much more ambitious plans for Halo 2 and Halo 3 remakes than what eventually appeared in Halo: Campaign Evolved, with multiplayer, Forge, Firefight, Theater and additional missions all considered before the projects were apparently cancelled.
The information comes from a report claiming that Halo Studios surveyed selected members of the community about features they wanted in future remakes. The studio allegedly referred to the planned remake trilogy internally as Project Manihi.
The projects were still at an early stage, so the surveyed features should not be treated as confirmed content that had already entered full production.
Halo 2 Remake Could Have Included Full Multiplayer
For the proposed Halo 2 remake, the reported survey asked players about several major features associated with the original game.
These included the return of dual wielding, a complete multiplayer component based on classic Halo 2 gameplay, a full collection of multiplayer playlists available at launch and the addition of Firefight.
| Reported Halo 2 feature | Status discussed in survey |
|---|---|
| Dual wielding | Considered important |
| Full multiplayer | Proposed |
| Classic Halo 2 gameplay | Proposed |
| Full launch playlist selection | Proposed |
| Firefight | Proposed |
| Halo 2: Anniversary cinematics | Considered |
| New bonus missions | Considered |
The survey also reportedly asked participants whether Halo Studios should reuse the cinematics created for Halo 2: Anniversary.
According to the report, some participants opposed that idea because the studio was also considering reusing assets from Halo: Campaign Evolved. That could have created an inconsistent visual style between gameplay and the older Blur Studio cinematics.
Participants reportedly considered dual wielding particularly important to preserving Halo 2's identity.
The multiplayer discussions also focused on maintaining the classic feel while making the game accessible to both casual and competitive players. Respondents reportedly wanted a broad selection of playlists available from launch rather than being added gradually.
Halo 3 Was Reportedly Planned as the Flagship Remake
The proposed Halo 3 remake appears to have been even more ambitious.
According to the report, Halo Studios wanted to take lessons from both Campaign Evolved and the planned Halo 2 remake and apply them to Halo 3.
The survey reportedly explored a much broader feature set, including multiplayer, Forge, Theater and Firefight.
One source claimed Halo 3 was intended to become the flagship project of the remake initiative, with more resources dedicated to delivering a complete package.
That would have placed the project much closer to the feature scope traditionally associated with Halo 3 rather than focusing almost entirely on campaign content.
Bonus Missions Were Also Being Considered
Both remakes were reportedly being evaluated for additional missions beyond their original campaigns.
Halo: Campaign Evolved had already established the idea of adding new missions to a remake, and Halo Studios was apparently considering continuing that approach with Halo 2 and Halo 3.
The projects were also reportedly intended to exist alongside a new mainline Halo game.

That suggests Microsoft and Halo Studios were, at one stage, considering a development roadmap that included multiple remakes while also preparing the next major entry in the franchise.
Such a plan would have required significant development resources, particularly if Halo 3 was expected to include campaign content, multiplayer, Forge, Theater and additional modes at the same time.
Layoffs Reportedly Ended the Plans
The reported Halo 2 and Halo 3 remake plans are now described as effectively cancelled following layoffs at Halo Studios and broader changes to how the franchise is being managed.
Because the projects were still being shaped through community surveys, it remains unclear how many of the proposed features would actually have reached the final games.
Still, the report suggests that Microsoft's original remake strategy may have been considerably larger than Campaign Evolved alone indicated.
If the plans had moved forward, Halo 2 could have returned with classic multiplayer, dual wielding and Firefight, while Halo 3 may have received the most complete remake package of the three, combining multiplayer, Forge, Theater, Firefight and new campaign content.
