GTA 6 Preorders Called Unprecedented as Take Two Explains Disc Free Launch

Take Two says GTA 6 has already generated an unusually strong preorder response ahead of its November 19 release, with CEO Strauss Zelnick describing early sales as unprecedented for both the company and the wider games industry.

The publisher has not disclosed an exact preorder figure, but management says demand is well above anything it has seen before.

At the same time, Take Two has explained why the game is not expected to ship on a traditional physical disc. The company says its business is already more than 90% digital, making large disc based releases less practical in some cases.

Zelnick said Take Two is pleased with the preorder response but is not treating the early numbers as a guarantee of final performance.

That caution makes sense because GTA 6 remains several months away from launch, and preorder strength does not automatically translate into the same level of long term sales.

Even so, the early response reinforces expectations that GTA 6 will become one of the biggest releases of the current console generation.

Take Two says discs make less sense for major games

The decision to launch without a traditional disc reflects the wider shift toward digital distribution.

Take Two says more than 90% of its business is already distributed digitally. For large games, the company believes requiring physical media can add complexity without providing much practical benefit for many customers.

Modern games also frequently require online registration, patches or additional downloads even when purchased physically.

That reduces the distinction between a disc and a digital download in day to day use.

The company is not abandoning physical products entirely. Take Two expects to continue releasing selected physical editions where there is enough demand.

For GTA 6, however, the standard retail version is expected to rely on a download code rather than a playable disc.

GTA 6 is central to Take Two’s fiscal outlook

Take Two currently expects fiscal 2027 net bookings of between $8 billion and $8.2 billion.

GTA 6 is expected to be one of the largest contributors to that result, alongside NBA 2K, WWE 2K, Zynga’s mobile games and other established franchises.

The wider Grand Theft Auto business also remains strong ahead of the new release.

GTA V has now sold more than 230 million units worldwide, giving Rockstar a massive existing audience that can potentially transition to the next game.

Recurrent spending across the Grand Theft Auto series increased 3% during the latest quarter.

GTA Online also continues to attract returning players more than a decade after launch, showing how long Rockstar can keep its games commercially active.

GTA Online still gives Rockstar a large active audience

GTA Online launched 13 years ago and remains an important part of Take Two’s business.

A recent update, the Quartz Center Heist, reportedly brought some former players back to the game.

That continued engagement matters because GTA 6 is not launching into a cold market. Rockstar already has millions of players familiar with the series and still actively involved with GTA Online.

The long lifespan of GTA V also gives Take Two confidence that GTA 6 could remain commercially important for many years rather than relying only on launch sales.

New GTA 6 presentation arrives August 27

Rockstar is preparing another major look at GTA 6 for August 27.

The presentation will debut on Netflix before appearing six hours later on Rockstar’s other channels.

Take Two described the arrangement as a new type of marketing partnership with Netflix, though the financial terms have not been disclosed.

The presentation should give players a clearer look at the game shortly before the final marketing push begins.

With preorder demand already described as the strongest Take Two has ever seen and GTA V still selling at an extraordinary scale, expectations around GTA 6 remain extremely high. The lack of a physical disc is one of the more significant changes surrounding the release, but Take Two clearly believes its audience has already moved far enough toward digital distribution for that decision to make commercial sense.
