Gothic 1 Remake keeps the old RPG spirit, but its opening hours may not work for everyone

Gothic 1 Remake is shaping up to be a faithful return to one of PC gaming’s cult RPGs, but it may still be a difficult sell for newcomers.

The remake, developed by Alkimia Interactive, follows the same core story as the original Gothic. You play as the nameless hero, thrown into the Valley of Mines and forced to survive among dangerous creatures, harsh factions, and prisoners who all have their own interests.

The game is not trying to turn Gothic into a modern open world RPG with constant guidance. There is no heavy handholding, no easy checklist design, and no mini map leading you from one marker to the next. You have to listen, explore, buy maps, remember directions, and figure out how the world works.

That is one of the remake’s biggest strengths. The Old Camp feels alive because it is built around people with routines, goals, and their own place in the world. Named characters belong to different groups, and your choices can change how you deal with them. Some quests can be solved in different ways, and you can even find certain answers before officially accepting the related task.

That freedom gives Gothic 1 Remake a clear identity. It wants you to pay attention to the world instead of rushing through icons on a map.

The first hours, however, may be rough. Movement can feel floaty, combat can feel awkward, and the visuals may not impress everyone despite the move to Unreal Engine 5. The gritty look suits Gothic’s world, but it can also make the early areas feel less inviting than they could be.

Combat keeps part of the original game’s directional system. Early fights against basic enemies may feel clumsy at first, but that is partly because the nameless hero starts as an unskilled fighter. As you level up, you can spend Learning Points with trainers to improve your abilities. There is also a combo system, along with an accessibility option for players who want simpler attacks, though using it reduces damage.

Gothic 1 Remake seems built for players who want a slower, harsher RPG where the world does not bend over backward to help you. That approach can be refreshing, but it can also feel strange if you are used to modern RPGs with smoother combat and clearer direction.

The remake’s challenge is clear. It needs to preserve what made Gothic special without making its rough edges too hard to accept. Based on the early preview, it may not win everyone over immediately, but players who push past the awkward opening could find a dense, reactive RPG with a strong sense of place.
