Gears of War turned 20 on November 7, and The Coalition marked the date by giving every Gears of War: E-Day player a villain from where it all started. RAAM, the Locust general from the 2006 original, is now a free multiplayer character, and claiming him takes nothing more than logging in.

The gift sits inside a two-week anniversary event that began the same week, according to The Coalition's anniversary post on Xbox Wire. It adds two limited modes. Guardian, in Versus, is a fight where only one leader makes it out alive, while For the Queen, in Horde Siege, disables the supply cache and leaves your squad to survive on its loadouts.
The bigger promise lands on December 1, when Season 2, titled Legacy, takes over from the launch season. It is built around the greatest hits of two decades of Gears, bringing back fan-favorite maps, modes and multiplayer skins.
Why the Gears of War 20th anniversary lands at a tense moment for E-Day
The original Gears of War launched on Xbox 360 in 2006 and introduced Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago and a rifle with a chainsaw bolted under the barrel. Twenty years later, the birthday arrives barely a month after E-Day, the prequel set on Emergence Day itself, launched on October 6 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, Game Pass and Steam.
That timing gives the celebration an edge. E-Day ranked among the biggest Xbox launches of 2026 by reported player counts, yet its retail sales have been reported at around 400,000 copies. A reported $500 million price tag has drawn attention too, though later reports say that sum covers years of studio work beyond E-Day. Neither figure comes from Microsoft, and retail numbers leave out the estimated 1.7 million players who arrived through Game Pass.
The anniversary message itself steers away from numbers. It talks about friendships formed in multiplayer lobbies, weekly Horde nights and couples who met playing the series. "Not bad for a game about chainsawing monsters," the studio wrote.

How to claim RAAM and play the Gears of War anniversary modes
There is no code to redeem and no store page to visit. Start E-Day and sign in, and RAAM is added to your multiplayer roster. The anniversary post gives no deadline for the claim, so there is little reason to wait until the event modes rotate out.
Guardian and For the Queen are limited-time modes that run for the two weeks of the event. Both are online multiplayer, and on Xbox that requires a Game Pass subscription that includes online play.
The celebration is the second of three themed events in Season 1: Emergence, which started with early access on October 1 and runs until December 1. Halloween came first and an event called Thanksgibbing follows. Each runs for two weeks with its own Versus mode, Horde Siege mission and rewards, according to The Coalition's Season 1 roadmap.
What Gears of War: E-Day Season 2: Legacy brings on December 1
Legacy is where the nostalgia gets serious. The Coalition calls it a season dedicated to the 20th anniversary, drawn from the franchise's most memorable moments, and says it will reimagine characters in ways the team has "always wanted to see them".
The example shown so far is Solemn Memories Dom, a skin that puts Dominic Santiago in the suit he wears in the famous photo of him and his wife Maria from Gears of War 2.
Season 2 also debuts the reward for Dead Serious, the E-Day version of the series' traditional Seriously achievement. Earning it unlocks a medal, title, banner, emblem and icon, plus, for the first time in the franchise, a Legendary character skin.
What the Gears of War anniversary means for E-Day players next
E-Day is planned to run at least five post-launch seasons, with Infiltration, Pendulum and Devotion already named after Legacy. Before launch, The Coalition said some classic features, including meat shields and chainsaw duels, could not make it into a game rebuilt from scratch.
That makes Legacy the first real test of how much old Gears the new game can absorb. The full list of returning maps and modes is not public yet, so for now the birthday amounts to a free villain and two weeks of event modes. December 1 is when looking back has to give E-Day players a reason to stay.
