Gears of War: E-Day Tops Xbox Stores and Becomes 2026’s Second Biggest Xbox Launch

Gears of War: E-Day has climbed to the top of the Xbox digital store in the US and several other markets, adding another strong result to what is already one of Microsoft's biggest launches of 2026.

The game reportedly holds the number one position on the US Xbox store, ahead of titles including Minecraft Dungeons 2 and Star Wars: Galactic Racer. It has also reached the top position in the UK and multiple other regions.

Separate player tracking data indicates E-Day is now the second biggest Xbox launch of 2026, placing it ahead of Halo: Campaign Evolved while remaining behind Forza Horizon 6.

E-Day Beats Halo but Falls Short of Forza Horizon 6

According to reported player data, Gears of War: E-Day attracted 8.6% more players at launch than Halo: Campaign Evolved.

Forza Horizon 6 remains comfortably ahead, however.

E-Day's launch player count reached around 67.3% of the audience recorded by Forza Horizon 6 during its own opening period.

The figures suggest E-Day has generated substantial interest despite launching directly into Microsoft's subscription ecosystem.

That is notable because Game Pass gives subscribers another way to access the game without purchasing the standard edition separately.

Digital Sales Are Strong Despite Game Pass Availability

Reaching the top of Xbox's paid charts suggests a meaningful number of players are still choosing to buy E-Day directly.

Game Pass has sometimes created debate over whether subscription access reduces conventional game sales, but E-Day's current store position shows that both models can operate alongside each other.

Some players may prefer permanent ownership, while others may be purchasing premium versions or editions that include additional benefits.

The available store ranking does not reveal exact unit sales, so it should not be treated as a direct measure of total revenue.

It does, however, show that E-Day is currently outperforming other paid games on Xbox storefronts in several major markets.

Estimates Put Direct Sales at Around 230,000 Copies

Earlier third-party estimates suggested Gears of War: E-Day had sold approximately 230,000 copies across Steam and Xbox.

The estimate placed Steam sales at around 168,000 copies, while Xbox console and PC sales were estimated at roughly 62,000.

The same analysis estimated that approximately 1.7 million people accessed the game through Game Pass.

Of those players, an estimated 722,000 reportedly purchased the five-day early access upgrade.

The analyst also estimated approximately $37 million in gross revenue.

These figures have not been confirmed by Microsoft or developer The Coalition, so they should be treated as external estimates rather than official sales data.

Game Pass Appears to Be Expanding the Audience

The estimated Game Pass figures show why direct sales alone do not provide a complete picture of E-Day's launch.

If the 1.7 million Game Pass estimate is broadly accurate, the subscription audience would substantially exceed the number of traditional purchases during the same period.

The large number of estimated early access upgrades also suggests Microsoft can still generate additional revenue from subscription players.

That model allows subscribers to access the core game while offering optional paid upgrades to players who want earlier access or additional content.

Gears Remains One of Xbox's Biggest Franchises

E-Day's position near the top of Microsoft's 2026 releases indicates that Gears remains commercially relevant years after the series first became one of Xbox's defining franchises.

The game's performance is particularly notable because it is competing with another established Xbox property in Halo and the much larger launch audience achieved by Forza Horizon 6.

For now, Forza Horizon 6 retains the strongest Xbox launch of the year, but E-Day has established itself clearly in second place based on the available player data.

With the game continuing to lead Xbox store charts in several countries, its launch momentum appears to be holding beyond the initial release period.
