Gears of War: E-Day has faced questions about its development costs following reports that Microsoft spent more than $500 million on the project. However, new information suggests that the figure includes substantial work completed by The Coalition on other Xbox games and technology projects.
According to people familiar with Microsoft's internal financial accounting, auditors attributed approximately $500 million in expenses to The Coalition between Gears 5 and Gears of War: E-Day.
That figure reportedly covers six to seven years of studio operations rather than the development of E-Day alone.
The distinction is important as Microsoft continues restructuring its gaming division and evaluating the financial performance of its studios.
The Coalition Worked on Several Xbox Games Beyond Gears of War
The Coalition has contributed technical expertise to multiple Xbox projects, particularly those developed using Unreal Engine.
Its reported contributions include Avowed, Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, Clockwork Revolution, State of Decay 3, Grounded, and Grounded 2.
The studio has also reportedly assisted with an upcoming StarCraft reboot.
Beyond game development, The Coalition worked with Epic Games on The Matrix Awakens and Alpha Point technology demonstrations.
Both projects helped showcase Unreal Engine 5 capabilities, while some of the resulting technology was reportedly used across other games.
These responsibilities contributed to the studio's operating expenses but were not exclusively related to E-Day.
Canceled Projects and Development Disruptions Increased Costs
The Coalition also experienced organizational changes following Rod Fergusson's departure in early 2020.
During that period, Microsoft evaluated the studio's future direction while the COVID pandemic disrupted established development workflows.

The studio reportedly spent more than 18 months developing an Xbox prototype that was eventually canceled.
Development of Gears of War: E-Day began in earnest later, following leadership changes.
These circumstances complicate attempts to calculate the game's actual production budget.
Microsoft's Accounting Raises Concerns About Potential Layoffs
The reported financial allocation has raised questions about how Microsoft evaluates studios that support projects outside their primary franchises.
Costs associated with shared technology, development assistance, and canceled projects may appear under one studio's financial responsibilities.
There are concerns that the approximately $500 million figure could influence future restructuring decisions.
However, there is no confirmation that Microsoft intends to close The Coalition.
E-Day reportedly received positive reviews but faced competition from major releases, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Grand Theft Auto 6.
The situation illustrates the difficulty of evaluating development costs when studios contribute to multiple projects.
While Microsoft reportedly attributed more than $500 million to The Coalition, the available information does not establish that Gears of War: E-Day itself cost that amount to develop.
