Forza Horizon 6 is almost here, and the first Xbox Series X and Series S comparisons show that Playground Games has delivered a strong console version on both systems. The game offers Quality and Performance modes on each console, with Series X targeting higher resolution and Series S making expected cuts while still holding 60FPS.
On Xbox Series X, Quality Mode runs at native 4K and 30FPS. This is the best option if you want the sharpest image, richer detail, and the strongest overall presentation. It should be especially useful for players who spend time in Photo Mode or want the game to look as clean as possible on a 4K display.
Performance Mode on Series X keeps the 4K target but uses dynamic resolution scaling to maintain 60FPS. The image is not quite as detailed as Quality Mode, but the smoother frame rate will likely make it the preferred option for most racing fans.
Xbox Series S also gets both modes. Quality Mode runs at up to 1440p and 30FPS with dynamic scaling, while Performance Mode runs at 1080p and 60FPS, also with dynamic scaling. The Performance Mode on Series S looks softer and less detailed, but early testing suggests it holds a stable 60FPS.
| Console | Quality Mode | Performance Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | Native 4K at 30FPS | 4K target with dynamic scaling at 60FPS |
| Xbox Series S | 1440p target with dynamic scaling at 30FPS | 1080p target with dynamic scaling at 60FPS |
The biggest difference between the two consoles is clarity and distant detail. Series X has the sharper image and better overall presentation, which is expected from the more powerful hardware. Series S loses some sharpness, especially in Performance Mode, but the result still looks strong for the smaller console.

The important part is that both consoles appear to offer smooth 60FPS gameplay in Performance Mode. For a fast open world racing game, that matters more than a perfect static resolution. If the frame rate remains stable across the full game, Series S players should still get a very solid experience.
Digital Foundry’s early tech review also points to strong console performance. Their testing found no recorded dips in Performance Mode, with Series X targeting 4K and Series S targeting 1080p through dynamic resolution scaling.
Forza Horizon 6 begins early access on May 15 for Premium Edition and Premium Upgrade buyers. The full launch is set for May 19 on Xbox Series X and S, PC, and Xbox Game Pass.
For most players, Performance Mode will probably be the best choice because it gives the game the smooth feel that racing needs. Quality Mode is still worth using if you care more about image detail, screenshots, and visual polish. Either way, the early comparison suggests Forza Horizon 6 is well optimized across both Xbox consoles.
