Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth preload is live on Xbox, but you need 170GB of free space

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is now available to preload on Xbox Series X and Series S ahead of its June 3, 2026 launch, but players will need to clear a lot of storage before installing it. The Microsoft Store lists the Xbox preload at about 170GB, making it one of the largest recent downloads on the platform.

That size is especially important for Xbox Series S owners. The base Series S has limited usable internal storage, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth can take up around half of that space once installed. If you also keep large games such as Forza Horizon 6 installed, storage management will quickly become a problem.

The free demo is also huge, so even trying the game needs planning

Players who are not ready to buy the full game can still try the free demo on the Xbox Store. The demo includes progress that carries over to the main release, which makes it useful for anyone who wants to test the game before launch. But even that demo is large, taking up around 90GB of storage.

That means Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is not a small download even in trial form. If your Xbox storage is already close to full, you may need to uninstall other large games, move titles to an expansion card, or use external storage for older Xbox One games to free up internal SSD space.

The large file size is not completely surprising. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a large action RPG with big environments, cinematic presentation, voice acting, high quality assets, and a much more open structure than Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Still, 170GB is a major install size for any console game, especially on hardware where storage upgrades are still expensive.

The Xbox launch is also important because Square Enix has been bringing more of its major titles to Microsoft’s platform. Final Fantasy 7 Remake already arrived on Xbox, and Rebirth is following quickly with preorders and a demo available before release. For Xbox players who waited years to play this part of the remake trilogy, the preload going live is a clear sign that launch is close.

The storage demand may also affect how some players approach the game. Anyone planning to play on day one should start downloading early, especially with slower internet connections or data caps. A 170GB download can take hours, and in some cases much longer, depending on connection speed.

There is also a practical question for Series S players: what should be removed? Large live service games, racing titles, shooters, and RPGs can each take more than 100GB now, so keeping several installed at once is becoming harder. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is another reminder that modern console storage fills up quickly.

The good news is that preload is already live, so players can prepare before launch day rather than waiting until June 3. If you plan to jump in as soon as the game unlocks, clear space now, start the download early, and use the demo only if you are comfortable giving up another 90GB temporarily.
