xAI has expanded its massive Colossus AI data center footprint by acquiring a third building, accelerating its push to scale large-model training infrastructure in the U.S. South.
Elon Musk confirmed the purchase in late December, saying the additional facility would significantly boost available training compute as xAI ramps up development of Grok and future models.
A third building, bigger ambitions
Musk said the newly acquired building, referred to internally as “MACROHARDRR,” forms part of the broader Colossus complex and pushes the site toward an eye-catching target: nearly 2 gigawatts of total training capacity.
That power envelope places Colossus among the largest AI-focused data center projects currently disclosed, reflecting how aggressively xAI plans to scale its infrastructure compared with rivals.
Location near Memphis, details still emerging
Reporting places the expanded Colossus complex in the Memphis area, with some property records and local coverage pointing to a site just across the state line in Southaven, Mississippi. xAI has not publicly detailed how workloads will split across the three buildings or when the newest facility will reach full production.
GPUs, vendors, and scale
According to coverage cited by multiple outlets, Colossus already runs more than 200,000 Nvidia GPUs, with expectations that Nvidia hardware will remain central as xAI expands further.
Some reports also point to potential upside for major server suppliers such as Dell and Super Micro, which stand to benefit from continued large-scale AI infrastructure orders tied to the buildout.
Power draw and scrutiny
The sheer scale of the expansion has drawn attention beyond the tech sector. Colossus’ power needs reportedly link closely to nearby energy infrastructure, including a natural gas power plant, and have triggered environmental and community scrutiny over energy use and emissions.
These concerns echo broader debates around the sustainability of hyperscale AI data centers as companies race to deploy ever-larger models.
What’s next
xAI has not shared a public timeline for bringing the third building fully online. Industry watchers will focus on:
- Confirmation of final site details and permitting
- Clarification of power sourcing and grid impact
- Updated disclosures on GPU counts and training milestones
If Musk’s stated targets hold, Colossus could soon become one of the most powerful AI training hubs in operation, underscoring how central infrastructure scale has become in the global AI race.
