Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate may finally be shown again later this month.
The game was first announced in May 2021 during the series’ 35th anniversary, but Square Enix has shared very little since then. Fans only know that the next mainline Dragon Quest game is being built with Unreal Engine 5 and that it may make changes to the series’ long running command battle system.
That long wait may be close to ending. Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii recently said a new series livestream will air on May 27 to celebrate the franchise’s 40th anniversary. He added that there may be an announcement about the next game, along with other updates.
That does not guarantee a full Dragon Quest XII reveal, but it is the strongest sign in years that the game could return to the spotlight soon.

Dragon Quest has stayed active while fans waited. Square Enix has released several remakes, including HD 2D versions of the early Dragon Quest games and Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. Those releases helped keep the series visible on modern platforms while the next numbered entry remained quiet.
| Game | Current status |
|---|---|
| Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate | Announced in 2021, possible update on May 27 |
| Engine | Unreal Engine 5 |
| Main expected change | Updated command battle system |
| Series livestream | May 27, 2026 |
| Event focus | Dragon Quest 40th anniversary |
The interest around Dragon Quest XII is high because the series is in a strong position. Dragon Quest XI helped grow the franchise’s global audience, and the recent remakes introduced older entries to new players.
The next game also carries extra weight because it may modernize parts of Dragon Quest without abandoning what longtime fans love. The battle system has always been one of the series’ most traditional elements, so any change will need to be handled carefully.
A May 27 reveal would make sense. The 40th anniversary gives Square Enix the right stage, and five years of silence is long enough that fans are ready for real details.
For now, Dragon Quest XII is still not confirmed for the event. But Horii’s comment makes this the clearest moment to watch since the game was first announced. If Square Enix is ready, May 27 could finally show what the next era of Dragon Quest looks like.
