Chrome explores blocking ads from using camera, mic, and location permissions

Google is exploring a Chrome change that would block ads from using camera, microphone, and location permissions granted to a website.

The work follows recent Chrome changes such as lazy loading for video and audio.

Today, when a user allows a site to access sensitive features such as the camera, microphone, precise location, screen sharing, or clipboard, that approval applies to the entire page. Modern webpages often load third-party scripts such as advertising code. Those scripts may also gain access to the same permissions without clear user awareness.

The proposal, called Selective Permissions Intervention, would stop third-party ad scripts from using powerful permissions granted to the main page. Access would stay limited to the site the user chose to trust instead of extending to embedded content inside the page.

According to the explainer, if an ad tries to access one of these sensitive features, Chrome would block the request, show a warning for developers, and notify the site owner. The protection covers data such as location, camera, microphone, clipboard, screen capture, USB, and Bluetooth. Ads that need this information would have to ask the website to request it instead of calling the feature directly.

This change targets a weakness in the current permission model. Browser permissions operate at the page level even though pages combine content from multiple outside sources. Limiting permission use to the trusted site would give users clearer control over sensitive data such as audio, video, and location.

The work is still at an early proposal stage. The specification lives in a personal repository and lacks wider community backing. There is no public timeline for Chrome implementation.

Selective Permissions Intervention is still an early concept. The work highlights growing focus on aligning browser permissions with real user intent rather than hidden third-party behavior.
