Shrek 2 Remastered Earns Steam Deck and Steam Machine Verified Status Ahead of Release

Shrek 2 Remastered has officially received Steam Deck Verified and Steam Machine Verified status, confirming that the upcoming remake meets Valve's compatibility requirements for both gaming platforms.

Developed by Aspyr, the remaster brings back the 2004 action adventure game with updated graphics, additional features and improvements designed for modern hardware.

The certification arrives ahead of the game's November 2026 release, allowing players interested in handheld gaming to check its compatibility before purchasing.

However, the relatively demanding PC system requirements have raised questions about how well the Unreal Engine 5 remaster will perform on Steam Deck.

Shrek 2 Remastered Meets Valve's Compatibility Requirements

Valve's Verified certification indicates that Shrek 2 Remastered meets several important usability requirements.

These include proper controller support, suitable default graphics settings, readable interface text and correctly displayed controller icons.

The certification also applies to Steam Machine, suggesting that the game should work with the platform's standard control and display configurations.

For Steam Deck owners, the Verified status is particularly important because the original Shrek 2 was developed long before modern handheld gaming PCs became popular.

Aspyr has updated the game's presentation while retaining its recognizable characters and adventure gameplay.

The remaster also introduces Photo Mode, allowing players to capture scenes during gameplay.

However, Valve's compatibility certification does not necessarily guarantee a particular frame rate or consistently smooth performance in every situation.

Unreal Engine 5 Requirements Raise Steam Deck Performance Questions

Despite originating from a game released more than two decades ago, Shrek 2 Remastered has relatively demanding minimum hardware specifications.

The listed requirements include an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card and an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor.

These specifications are notable for Steam Deck owners because Valve's handheld operates within a much smaller power budget than conventional desktop gaming hardware.

The game also uses Unreal Engine 5, which can introduce additional rendering demands depending on the visual features implemented.

Although the remaster has earned Verified status, its actual graphical settings, frame rates and battery consumption on Steam Deck remain to be established through independent testing.

Steam Machine owners may have more flexibility depending on their hardware configuration.

Shrek 2 Remastered is currently available for preorder on Steam at $26.99 until November 17, 2026.

The remaster's certification gives players an early indication of controller and interface compatibility, but detailed performance testing will be necessary to determine how well it handles demanding scenes on portable hardware.

For players who enjoyed the original 2004 release, the updated version offers an opportunity to revisit the adventure with modern graphics and improved platform support.
