Chrome 147 security update fixes 19 flaws, including two high-risk bugs

Google has released a new Chrome 147 security update for desktop users, and it is worth installing as soon as possible. The update brings Chrome to version 147.0.7727.116/117 on Windows and macOS, while Linux users get version 147.0.7727.116.

According to Google’s Chrome Releases blog, this update fixes 19 security issues.

The good news is that Google has not said these bugs are being actively used in attacks. Still, Chrome is one of the most important apps on any PC because it handles websites, downloads, logins, extensions, and payment pages. Even when a bug is not known to be exploited, updating quickly is still the safer move.

Chrome users should update now because browser security bugs can become serious very quickly

Google only shared details for three of the fixed vulnerabilities that were reported by external researchers. Two of them are rated high risk. One is CVE-2026-6919, a use-after-free issue in DevTools. The other is CVE-2026-6920, a GPU-related memory issue that was reported by a Microsoft employee. A third GPU bug, CVE-2026-6921, is rated medium risk.

Tenable’s advisory says CVE-2026-6919 could allow a remote attacker who had already compromised the renderer process to potentially escape Chrome’s sandbox through a crafted HTML page. It also says CVE-2026-6920 is an out-of-bounds read issue in the GPU component, while CVE-2026-6921 could allow a sandbox escape through a crafted video file on Windows.

Google says Chrome updates usually roll out over the coming days or weeks, so some users may not receive the patch at the exact same time. Users who do not want to wait can check manually. On desktop, Google says to open Chrome, go to the three-dot menu, choose Help, then About Google Chrome, and relaunch the browser if an update is installed.

Android users also received Chrome 147.0.7727.111, which Google says will become available through Google Play over several days. The iOS version is different, with Google releasing Chrome 148.0.7778.47 through the App Store.

This is not a flashy update, but it is an important one. Browser security patches often look small, yet they protect the app people use most often to reach the internet. If Chrome is already updated, there is nothing more to do. If it is still waiting for a restart, closing and reopening the browser should finish the update.
