ChatGPT’s new default model aims to cut down on unnecessary emojis

OpenAI has started rolling out GPT 5.5 Instant as the new default model for ChatGPT, replacing GPT 5.3 Instant. The update focuses on cleaner answers, better accuracy, and less visual clutter in responses.

One of the most noticeable changes is OpenAI’s promise that GPT 5.5 Instant will use fewer unnecessary emojis. That may sound small, but it matters if you use ChatGPT for work, research, writing, or any task where you want clear text without extra decoration.

The new model is also designed to give tighter answers without losing useful detail. In practice, that should mean responses that get to the point faster while still covering the main information you asked for.

OpenAI also says GPT 5.5 Instant is more reliable than the previous instant model. The company claims it produces 52.5 percent fewer hallucinations on high stakes prompts related to areas like medicine, law, and finance. It also says inaccurate claims are down by 37.3 percent in especially difficult chats.

Those numbers are promising, though independent testing will be needed before we know how much difference people will notice in normal use.

GPT 5.5 Instant also improves how ChatGPT uses context from past chats, uploaded files, and connected apps such as Gmail when those features are enabled. The model is meant to decide more carefully when that extra context is useful, rather than pulling it in every time.

Another useful change is better transparency around memory. You should be able to review which memory sources influenced a chat, making it easier to remove old or incorrect information if it affects a response.

Here is a quick look at what GPT 5.5 Instant brings:

ChangeWhat it means
New default modelGPT 5.5 Instant replaces GPT 5.3 Instant
Fewer emojisResponses should feel cleaner and less cluttered
More concise answersReplies should be shorter without dropping key details
Better accuracyOpenAI claims fewer hallucinations and fewer inaccurate claims
Smarter context useChatGPT can better use past chats, files, and Gmail when enabled
Memory transparencyYou can review which memory sources affected a response

The emoji change may be the easiest one to notice, but the bigger update is about trust and usability. A default model needs to be fast, clear, and dependable. If GPT 5.5 Instant delivers on those goals, ChatGPT should feel more useful in everyday conversations, especially for people who prefer direct answers over decorated ones.
