How to Change Steam Account Username
Many Steam users eventually want a fresh username - maybe your old one feels outdated, or you just want something new for friends and gaming communities to see. While your Steam Account Name (login) is permanent, you can still change your Profile Name, which is the display name visible in games, chat, and on your profile. This guide shows you exactly how to do it on both desktop and mobile.

What Name Can You Change on Steam?

Steam uses three distinct identifiers:
  • SteamID – A permanent, unique numeric identifier; cannot be changed.
  • Account Name – The name you created when signing up; it’s also unchangeable, even by Steam Support.
  • Profile Name – Your display name or username visible to others in chat, games, and community. This can be changed anytime.

How to Change Your Steam Profile Name

1. On Desktop (PC/Mac)

  1. Open the Steam app and click your profile picture or name at the top.
  2. Select "View Profile."
  3. Click "Edit Profile."
  4. In the "Profile Name" field (under the GENERAL section), enter your new display name.
  5. Scroll down and click "Save."

2. On Mobile (Steam App)

  1. Open the Steam app and tap your profile picture (top right).
  2. Tap "View Profile."
  3. Hit "Edit Profile."
  4. Modify the "Profile Name" under the GENERAL section.
  5. Tap "Save."

Why Can't You Change Your Account Name?

The Account Name is deeply embedded in Steam's architecture (similar to a database primary key), which complicates changing it without risking significant issues across Valve’s systems. Valve has confirmed it's currently not possible - even for support staff.

FAQs

Can Steam Support change my account name? No. Steam Support cannot alter your Account Name either.  How often can I change my display (profile) name? You can change your Profile Name as often as you'd like—there’s no limit.
