Baldur’s Gate 3 Adds Xbox Play Anywhere as More Developers Support Cross Platform Ownership

Baldur’s Gate 3 now supports Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing you to buy the game once and access it across Xbox Series X and Series S, supported Windows PCs, and compatible handheld gaming devices through the Xbox ecosystem.

Larian publishing director Michael Douse said the studio added the feature because it provides value to players who move between Xbox and Windows hardware. The developer had the time and resources to complete the work and believed the update would make the game more convenient for its Xbox audience.

The addition arrives almost three years after Baldur’s Gate 3 first launched. It demonstrates that Xbox Play Anywhere support can be added later, although retrofitting the feature may be difficult when console and PC versions use different code, progression systems, or save structures.

Xbox Play Anywhere combines purchases and saves

Xbox Play Anywhere allows supported games purchased digitally through Xbox to work across Xbox consoles and the Xbox app on Windows.

Compatible titles normally share ownership, achievements, downloadable content where supported, and cloud saves. This means you can begin a game on an Xbox Series X, continue on a Windows laptop, and later play through an Xbox focused handheld without buying another copy.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available through Xbox Play Anywhere on Xbox Series consoles and the Xbox app for Windows. Purchases made through other stores, such as Steam, are not converted into Xbox ownership.

Larian added the feature for player convenience

Douse described Xbox Play Anywhere as a useful part of Microsoft’s gaming ecosystem.

Larian decided to support it because the studio could complete the required work and believed that Xbox players would appreciate being able to move between devices. The decision was not tied to a new Game Pass release.

That distinction is important because Xbox Play Anywhere was previously associated closely with games entering Xbox Game Pass. More developers are now choosing the feature for games sold normally through the Xbox store.

The growing number of independently supported releases suggests publishers increasingly view shared Xbox and PC ownership as a standard customer benefit rather than something limited to Microsoft funded games.

More major games are adopting Play Anywhere

Baldur’s Gate 3 joins a growing collection of new and upcoming games supporting the feature.

Recent data cited in the report suggests that close to half of newly released Xbox games now support Play Anywhere. That rate can change over time, but it indicates that the feature is becoming more common.

Its growth is especially relevant as Microsoft works to connect Windows PCs, Xbox consoles, cloud gaming, and handheld devices more closely.

Project Neon shows that implementation can be simple

Project Neon, a classic shoot ’em up originally released on Neo Geo hardware, is also launching with Xbox Play Anywhere support.

Fullset representative Sascha Reuter said offering all versions together was an easy decision because it gives players more value and lets them switch systems freely.

Reuter compared the delivery process to placing files into a shared folder. Developers can submit packages targeting multiple platforms through Microsoft’s development tools, while Xbox APIs handle the location and synchronisation of compatible save data.

The process may be straightforward when a game is designed around it from the beginning. Older games can require significantly more work.

Adding support after launch can be difficult

Baldur’s Gate 3 and Resident Evil Village show that Play Anywhere can be added years after release, but not every title is suitable for conversion.

Console and PC versions may have separate save formats, achievement systems, downloadable content, account databases, or update schedules. If the versions have developed independently, combining them can cause synchronisation problems.

Fallout 76 has not received Play Anywhere support, with differences between its Xbox and PC versions cited as a major obstacle.

ChallengePossible consequence
Different save formatsProgress may fail to synchronise
Separate codebasesUpdates may behave differently
Different achievement systemsCompletion data may not transfer
Platform specific contentOwnership can become complicated
Separate online environmentsCharacters or accounts may remain isolated

For this reason, developers are more likely to include Play Anywhere during initial development than add it several years later.

Publisher support remains inconsistent

Some companies provide partial cross platform benefits without fully adopting Xbox Play Anywhere.

Ubisoft has started granting PC versions of selected games to people who own the Xbox release. However, those PC versions may not include shared Xbox achievements.

Electronic Arts generally keeps Xbox and PC purchases separate and does not provide the same ownership or save continuity across the two platforms.

These differences can make the Xbox ecosystem feel inconsistent. Two games purchased from the same console store may offer very different rights when you move to a Windows PC.

Clear Play Anywhere labels are therefore important before buying.

Xbox is moving closer to Windows

Microsoft is developing Xbox Helix as part of its effort to reduce the separation between Xbox and Windows gaming.

Play Anywhere supports that direction by treating console and PC players as part of one purchasing ecosystem. Microsoft’s planned backward compatibility technology for PC could further expand the number of Xbox games available on Windows.

The company has previously said Play Anywhere can improve engagement and sales because players are able to access purchased games more frequently and on more devices.

For handheld gaming PCs, the feature is particularly useful. A game purchased for an Xbox console can also be installed through the Xbox app on a compatible handheld, with progress transferred automatically.

Baldur’s Gate 3 joining Xbox Play Anywhere is a notable example because it is a major third party game receiving support long after launch. The update gives existing Xbox owners more flexibility while showing other publishers that shared console and PC ownership can remain valuable even when a game is not part of Xbox Game Pass.
