ASUS brings back its classic ROG Crosshair copper heatsink for a 20th anniversary motherboard

ASUS is bringing back one of its most recognizable motherboard designs for ROG’s 20th anniversary.

The company has teased a new ROG 20th Anniversary Edition motherboard that appears to take direct inspiration from the original 2006 ROG Crosshair. That board helped launch ASUS’ Republic of Gamers brand and became memorable for its full copper heatsink design.

The original Crosshair used copper heatsinks and heat pipes across the VRM, northbridge, and southbridge. At the time, that kind of cooling design stood out because it was built for enthusiasts who wanted better thermal performance while pushing their CPUs harder.

ASUS’ new teaser shows a modern board with a similar copper heatsink look. This time, the heatsink includes the official ROG logo, which was not present on the 2006 model. The teaser also appears to show a small display near the bottom of the heatsink, along with a visible “2006” marking.

ASUS has not confirmed the full specs yet. The company has not revealed the socket, chipset, price, or launch date. Still, there are reasons to expect this could be an AMD AM5 motherboard. The original ROG Crosshair was built for AMD processors, and a recent EEC filing reportedly mentioned an X870E chipset.

If it is based on X870E, the board will likely target high end Ryzen builders and collectors. The anniversary design also suggests ASUS may position it as a premium limited edition product rather than a normal mainstream motherboard.

The timing makes sense. ROG has grown far beyond motherboards over the last two decades, covering graphics cards, laptops, monitors, peripherals, handhelds, and more. Bringing back the Crosshair look is a direct nod to where the brand started.

For longtime PC enthusiasts, the copper heatsink is the main appeal. It recalls a period when motherboard designs were more experimental and cooling hardware was a big visual part of a build. For newer builders, it could simply be one of the more distinctive AM5 boards of the year.

ASUS is expected to show more during its ROG event on June 1 and possibly at Computex. Until then, the teaser points to a nostalgia driven motherboard with modern hardware under a very old school ROG look.
