Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced brings Edward Kenway back with a full remake

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will bring Edward Kenway’s pirate story back on July 9, 2026, with a full remake for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S and X. Ubisoft is not treating this as a simple visual upgrade. The game has been rebuilt on the modern Anvil engine, with new story content, a seamless open world, updated traversal, deeper naval combat, and modern rendering features.

The remake is being led by Ubisoft Singapore, the studio that also worked on Skull and Bones. That makes sense because Black Flag is still remembered most strongly for its naval combat and open sea exploration. The original game expanded the ship systems first introduced in Assassin’s Creed III and turned them into the heart of the experience. Resynced keeps that identity, but adds new systems around it.

Ubisoft is rebuilding Black Flag while keeping its pirate adventure intact

The core story still follows Edward Kenway, a Welsh pirate captain who becomes involved in the conflict between Assassins and Templars while searching for the Observatory. Matt Ryan is returning as Edward, and Adewale is also back with his original voice actor.

Ubisoft has confirmed around six hours of new content. This includes new quests, expanded officer storylines, new content for Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet, and three new Jackdaw officers tied to the main story. At the same time, some older material is not returning. Multiplayer has been removed, Freedom Cry is not included, Aveline de Grandpré is not present, and the original Abstergo and Desmond style modern day framing has been replaced by new “Rifts” connected more directly to Edward’s world.

The open world is now seamless. You can sail to islands, step off the Jackdaw, and enter locations such as Havana without loading screens. Traversal has also been rebuilt, while stealth now includes the ability to crouch anywhere. The rope dart appears earlier in the story and can counter firearms by knocking back and disarming enemies.

Combat has been expanded with new parrying, kicks, and hidden blade finishers. Tailing missions have also been adjusted to feel less rigid. A new trinket system adds small passive bonuses, while famous armor sets such as Mayan armor and Templar armor return as cosmetic rewards.

Naval combat remains central. Different Jackdaw officers now offer combat bonuses, while new secondary fire modes add more options during battles. Swivel guns have also been changed into a free aiming system, similar to Assassin’s Creed Rogue. The Jackdaw will support deeper cosmetic customization, including mastheads, ship cosmetics, and pets.

On the technical side, Resynced supports ray traced global illumination, ray traced reflections, dynamic weather, environment destruction, ultrawide displays, HDR, an uncapped frame rate on PC, handheld presets, and an in game benchmark tool. The PS5 Pro version will ship with PSSR 2.0 support at launch.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced looks like Ubisoft’s attempt to modernize one of the series’ most popular entries without turning it into a full RPG. The original crafting and ship upgrade structure remains, while the remake adds smoother exploration, stronger presentation, and more reasons to return to Edward Kenway’s Caribbean.
