Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will add around six hours of new content while rebuilding Ubisoft’s pirate adventure for modern hardware. Game Director Richard Knight said the remake is focused on Edward Kenway’s story, with new quests, officer quests, smoother exploration, better visuals, and quality of life changes designed to make Black Flag feel like it was built for today.
The remake launches on July 9 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. Ubisoft is not treating this as a simple remaster. Knight said a remake gives the team room to rethink the experience, move the game into the modern Anvil engine, and add features that were not possible when the original launched in 2013. That includes crouching anywhere, improved water, ray tracing, global illumination, dynamic weather, and a seamless open world.
Ubisoft removed some older elements so Resynced can stay focused on Edward’s pirate journey
One of the biggest changes is the removal of the original game’s modern day Abstergo focus and multiplayer. Knight said that decision was made early because the team wanted to do one thing exceptionally well: Edward. The original Black Flag is still available for anyone who wants the older modern day story, but Resynced is being framed as a new version that happens after Assassin’s Creed Shadows in the current series timeline.
Ubisoft is still keeping some modern day structure through new “rifts.” These will offer what if style scenarios tied to Edward and his companions, while keeping the player close to the main Black Flag adventure. Freedom Cry and Aveline content are not part of the main focus, because Ubisoft did not want to split attention away from Edward’s story.
| Area | What Resynced changes |
|---|---|
| New content | Around six extra hours |
| Main focus | Edward Kenway’s story |
| Modern day sections | Reworked through rifts |
| Multiplayer | Removed |
| Underwater gameplay | Open ocean diving and enhanced wrecks |
| Progression | No full RPG overhaul |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | PSSR2 support confirmed |
| Sea shanties | More songs and a new shanty selector |
The core game length will still depend on playstyle. Knight said the main experience can take anywhere from 15 to 40 hours, depending on how much time players spend exploring the seamless open world. The six new hours come through added quests, officer activities, and other content, but Ubisoft also expects players to spend more time in the world because it is now more detailed and easier to explore.

Underwater exploration is also being expanded. Players can now dive anywhere in the open ocean by stopping the ship and jumping overboard. The diving bell still exists for specific shipwreck locations, which are similar in structure to the original but upgraded with richer water, more fish, and stronger presentation.
Progression is being kept closer to classic Black Flag rather than modern RPG style Assassin’s Creed. Edward still upgrades the Jackdaw and crafts gear, but there is no large skill tree overhaul. New trinkets and weapons provide light specialization, while costumes are cosmetic. The Mayan and Templar armor quests remain, but their gameplay perks now come through trinkets, letting players keep useful effects without being locked into one look.
Ubisoft is also giving the rope dart earlier in the story. Knight said the tool now works as a useful anti firearm option, letting Edward interrupt enemies who aim guns during chaotic fights. Ship customization, weapon transmogrification, more shanties, and a dedicated shanty wheel also help modernize the experience without changing what made Black Flag popular.
Black Flag Resynced is clearly trying to respect the original while cutting distractions and improving the pirate fantasy. The biggest test will be whether the new content, seamless world, and technical upgrades make the remake feel fresh without losing the tone that made Edward’s story so memorable.
