Apple is reportedly preparing a larger AI push for iOS 27 and macOS 27, with new image-editing tools in Photos and a more advanced chatbot-style Siri. The company has been criticized for moving slower than Google, OpenAI, and other AI rivals, but its next software updates may focus on bringing more useful AI features directly into Apple apps.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is working on a new Apple Intelligence Tools section inside the Photos app. This area may include three major tools: Extend, Enhance, and Reframe. These features would give users more ways to edit photos without needing a separate app.
Apple’s reported Photos upgrade could make AI image editing feel more natural for iPhone and Mac users
The Extend tool sounds like Apple’s answer to AI outpainting. It would let users expand an image beyond its original frame. For example, if someone takes a close-up photo of a building or landmark, the tool could generate extra scenery around it. Users may then drag the photo edges to decide how much of that new AI-generated area they want to keep.
Enhance would be more familiar. It would automatically improve lighting, color, and overall image quality. Apple already offers basic photo improvement tools, but this could make the process smarter and more automatic.
Reframe may be the most interesting feature for Apple’s ecosystem. It is reportedly designed for spatial photos, which capture depth information. The tool could let users change the perspective of a spatial photo, making it feel more flexible than a normal flat image.
| Reported feature | What it may do |
|---|---|
| Extend | Adds AI-generated content around the edges of a photo |
| Enhance | Improves lighting, color, and image quality automatically |
| Reframe | Changes the perspective of spatial photos |
| Apple Intelligence Tools | A new Photos section for these AI features |
These tools could help Apple compete more directly with AI photo features on Android phones. Google and Samsung have already made AI editing a major selling point, especially for removing objects, expanding images, and improving shots with a few taps. Apple’s advantage is that it can build these tools deeply into Photos across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Still, the rollout may not be smooth. The report says Extend and Reframe have faced development problems, so Apple may delay them if the tools are not ready. That would not be surprising. AI image editing can look impressive, but it can also create strange results if the generated areas do not match the original scene.
Apple is also reportedly working on a much smarter Siri. The new version may behave more like a chatbot, while still being built into Apple’s software. It could understand personal context, perform in-app actions, search the web, generate content, help with coding, summarize information, and handle files.
The report also says Apple may launch a dedicated Siri app in iOS 27. This app would store past conversations and support third-party AI extensions, including tools from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Apple is also testing a new Siri interface inside Dynamic Island and may eventually use Siri to replace or rebuild Spotlight search.
If these reports are accurate, iOS 27 and macOS 27 could be a major reset for Apple Intelligence. The company may not be trying to win by releasing the flashiest chatbot first. Instead, it may try to make AI useful inside the apps people already use every day.
