Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is now available on macOS, giving Apple users an official way to play Microsoft’s remastered real time strategy classic without relying on workarounds. The game first launched for Windows PCs in 2019 and later expanded to consoles, but its arrival on Mac is notable because Microsoft has rarely brought its modern Age of Empires releases to Apple platforms.
The move brings back a connection that had been missing for years. Older Age of Empires games, including the original entries and Age of Mythology, received official Mac ports in the early 2000s through MacSoft. But when Microsoft started releasing remasters and new entries in the series, macOS was left out. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition changes that, and it may give Mac players hope that more Microsoft strategy games could follow.
The macOS version includes the remaster’s visual upgrades, campaigns, multiplayer, and several expansions
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is a modern version of one of the most respected strategy games ever made. The remaster improves the visuals, adds control updates, includes new game modes, supports multiplayer, and keeps the historical campaigns that made the original so popular.
The macOS version also includes several expansions in the base package. Lords of the West, Dynasties of India, and Dawn of the Dukes are included, bringing extra civilizations and campaigns. More DLC is also available separately for players who want additional storylines and factions.
| Detail | macOS version |
|---|---|
| Game | Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition |
| Platform | macOS |
| Stores | Steam and Feral Interactive store |
| Mac App Store version | Coming later this year |
| Processor support | Apple Silicon native |
| Minimum chip | Apple M1 or A18 Pro |
| RAM | 8GB minimum |
| Storage | At least 16GB |
| macOS requirement | macOS 15.7 or newer |
The game is Apple Silicon native, which means it is built for modern Macs using Apple’s own chips rather than relying only on translation layers. The minimum requirements list an Apple M1 or A18 Pro processor with built in graphics, 8GB of RAM, macOS 15.7 or newer, and 16GB of storage space.
One detail is still unclear: crossplay. The Windows, Xbox, and PlayStation versions support crossplay with each other, but Microsoft and Feral have not clearly confirmed whether Mac players can join that same wider multiplayer pool. That will matter for players who want to compete or play with friends across platforms.

There is one helpful note for existing owners. Anyone who already owns Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition on Steam now gets access to the macOS version at no extra cost. That makes the release much easier to try for people who already bought the game for Windows.
For Mac players, this is a welcome release. Age of Empires II has remained popular for decades because its mix of civilization building, economy management, military strategy, and historical campaigns still works well today. Bringing the Definitive Edition to macOS gives Apple users a proper modern version of the classic, and it also shows that Microsoft may be more open to bringing selected PC gaming titles to Mac again.
