ZERO PARADES: For Dead Spies has received several Steam Deck-specific improvements aimed at making the text-heavy spy RPG run more smoothly on Valve’s handheld. The developers chose Vulkan rendering, added native 1280x800 support, introduced default frame rate caps for LCD and OLED models, and addressed memory-related crashes in a recent update.
The game is already playable on Steam Deck, but the studio says it made targeted changes rather than treating the handheld as an afterthought. Those changes could also improve the experience on other lower-end PCs and portable devices.
ZERO PARADES: For Dead Spies is available now on Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. The game is also discounted until July 9, with a larger discount available for players who already own Disco Elysium on Steam.
Vulkan Rendering Helps Reduce Linux Performance Overhead
One of the most important technical choices was the use of Vulkan instead of DirectX for rendering.
Steam Deck runs SteamOS, which is based on Linux. Many Windows games use DirectX, which can require translation through compatibility layers when played on Steam Deck. That process can create extra overhead and reduce performance.
By using Vulkan directly, the developers were able to avoid part of that translation process. Internal testing reportedly showed a performance increase of around 23% compared to the alternative approach.
| Optimization | Expected benefit |
|---|---|
| Vulkan renderer | Reduces Linux graphics translation overhead |
| Native 1280x800 support | Uses the full Steam Deck display resolution |
| LCD frame cap | Improves stability and battery efficiency |
| OLED frame cap | Takes advantage of the faster display |
| RAM-related fixes | Reduces the chance of crashes |
| Scalable text | Improves readability on the smaller screen |
The decision should help the game maintain more consistent performance while also reducing pressure on the Steam Deck’s limited hardware.
Steam Deck Gets Native 1280x800 Resolution Support
Many PC games target 1280x720 as a standard handheld resolution. Steam Deck, however, uses a 1280x800 display with a 16:10 aspect ratio.

ZERO PARADES now supports the handheld’s full 1280x800 resolution, giving players extra vertical screen space. That may sound like a minor difference, but it can be especially useful in a game built around large amounts of dialogue, menus, choices, and written information.
The extra room can make text easier to read and reduce how often players need to scroll through interface elements.
The developers also improved font scaling, which benefits more than Steam Deck players. Larger text options can help anyone playing on a small screen, sitting farther from a monitor, or needing better accessibility support.
Default Frame Rate Caps Aim for a More Stable Experience
The studio has applied different default frame rate limits depending on which Steam Deck model is being used.
The LCD Steam Deck is capped at 30 FPS, while the OLED model is capped at 45 FPS. These targets are intended to create smoother frame pacing and reduce unnecessary battery use.
| Steam Deck model | Default frame rate cap |
|---|---|
| Steam Deck LCD | 30 FPS |
| Steam Deck OLED | 45 FPS |
A lower but stable frame rate can often feel better than a higher frame rate that constantly drops during demanding scenes. The OLED model can aim higher because its display supports a 90Hz refresh rate, making 45 FPS a cleaner match for the panel.
Players may still be able to adjust settings manually, but the default configuration should provide a better starting point for people who simply want to launch the game and play.
Recent Patch Targets Memory Problems and Crashes
The recent D21 patch also addresses problems caused by memory limitations on Steam Deck. Some players had reportedly experienced crashes, particularly in heavier scenes or longer sessions.
Memory management can be a major challenge for modern games on handheld hardware. Steam Deck has shared system memory, meaning the CPU and GPU both rely on the same pool of RAM. A game that pushes textures, visual effects, dialogue systems, and background assets too aggressively can run into stability problems.
The new fixes may make the game more reliable for players who previously had issues.
Better Steam Deck Support Can Improve Every Version
The studio says that optimizing for Steam Deck also helps improve performance and accessibility across other platforms. Reducing rendering overhead, improving asset efficiency, scaling text, and tuning effects can benefit desktop PCs as well.
That approach is becoming increasingly important as more players use handheld PCs, older laptops, compact systems, and lower-power hardware.
ZERO PARADES: For Dead Spies may not be built around fast action, but its Steam Deck improvements show how much difference careful technical work can make for a game with dense writing, complex scenes, and a demanding interface.
