Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Producer Explains Why Nintendo Chose a Different Art Style From Breath of the Wild

Nintendo deliberately chose a different visual style for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake rather than following the artistic direction established by Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Series producer Eiji Aonuma recently explained that the development team wanted the remake's appearance to reflect its story, characters and overall identity.

According to Aonuma, Nintendo does not believe every Zelda game needs to share the same graphical presentation. Instead, the team considers which artistic approach works best for each individual project.

The comments come as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026.

Nintendo Wanted Ocarina of Time Remake to Have Its Own Visual Identity

During a recent interview, Aonuma discussed how Nintendo approaches art direction across the Zelda franchise.

He explained that Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom share a similar visual presentation because their stories are directly connected.

However, Ocarina of Time takes place within a different narrative setting, giving Nintendo an opportunity to explore another artistic approach.

The development team therefore focused on identifying a style that would complement the remake rather than reproducing the appearance of more recent Zelda releases.

Aonuma emphasized that changes to art direction should serve the game itself.

He also noted that the franchise has a long history of introducing major visual differences between individual entries.

This approach has allowed Nintendo to experiment with different character designs, environments and graphical techniques while maintaining the series' recognizable identity.

Aonuma Says Surprising Players Was Part of the Creative Process

Another important consideration was how players would react when encountering the remake's updated environments and characters.

Aonuma explained that unexpected artistic decisions can initially surprise players, especially when they differ significantly from familiar interpretations.

However, he believes that players can gradually appreciate an unfamiliar visual style once they experience how it complements the game.

The development team reportedly went through a similar process while reviewing its own work.

Some redesigned locations and characters initially surprised the developers themselves before the team became comfortable with the artistic direction.

Nintendo wanted players to experience that same progression when exploring the remake.

The producer also acknowledged that finding an appropriate visual identity can require considerable experimentation.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake is available exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 starting November 5, 2026.

The release gives players an opportunity to revisit the classic adventure with an updated presentation designed specifically for the remake, rather than adopting the visual style of Nintendo's more recent Zelda games.
