A recent survey of PC gaming enthusiasts has revealed considerable differences in how frequently people clean their gaming computers, with 45% of respondents reporting that they had cleaned their systems within the past six months.
However, another 40% said they either had not cleaned their PCs for more than a year or could not remember the last time they performed any maintenance.
The findings come from a community poll asking readers when they last removed dust or cleaned their gaming PCs.
Although the results are not representative of all PC gamers, they provide an interesting look at maintenance habits among desktop gaming enthusiasts.
Nearly Half of Respondents Clean Their Gaming PCs Regularly
The survey divided responses into six categories, ranging from cleaning within the previous 24 hours to not remembering when the computer was last maintained.
The largest individual group, accounting for 26% of responses, could not remember their last cleaning session.
Meanwhile, 23% reported cleaning their systems within the previous six months, while another 17% had done so within four weeks.
The complete results are shown below.
| Last PC cleaning session | Respondents |
|---|---|
| Cannot remember | 26% |
| Within six months | 23% |
| Within four weeks | 17% |
| Within the past year | 15% |
| More than one year ago | 14% |
| Within 24 hours | 5% |
Combining the three most recent categories shows that 45% of respondents had cleaned their computers within six months.
Another 15% reported performing maintenance within the past year, but not within six months.
The remaining 40% had either gone more than a year without cleaning or could not remember their last session.
Regular Cleaning Can Help Maintain PC Cooling Performance
Dust accumulation is a common problem in desktop computers, particularly systems with multiple cooling fans.
Over time, dust can collect on intake filters, heatsinks, case fans and graphics card cooling components.

Excessive buildup may restrict airflow and increase operating temperatures, especially during demanding workloads such as gaming.
However, the appropriate cleaning frequency depends on environmental conditions, computer placement and the effectiveness of dust filters.
Systems operating in dusty rooms or homes with pets may require more frequent attention.
For routine maintenance, switching off the computer, disconnecting power and carefully removing dust from accessible filters and cooling components can help maintain airflow.
Users should also avoid allowing fans to spin freely when using compressed air and should follow manufacturer recommendations when cleaning components.
The survey did not measure actual hardware temperatures or establish whether participants experienced performance problems.
Following the results, the publication introduced another community poll asking when readers last updated their motherboard BIOS.
The new question shifts attention from physical cleaning to firmware maintenance, another aspect of keeping gaming PCs operating reliably.
