Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition Brings Back the Original Green Look for the Brand’s 25th Anniversary

Xbox is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a new limited edition console and controller, both built around a translucent green design that directly nods to the original Xbox era. The console is called the Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition, and it will launch in November 2026, while the matching Xbox Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition arrives earlier in October 2026.

The new console is still based on the existing Xbox Series X, so this is not a mid generation hardware upgrade or a more powerful model. Instead, it is a collector focused version of the current console with a design meant to celebrate the history of the brand. It includes 1TB of storage and the same performance profile as the regular Xbox Series X.

The biggest difference is the look. Microsoft is using a translucent shell for the first time on Xbox Series X, drawing from the original Xbox and the classic OG Green color that many longtime fans remember. The design also includes a green glowing “X” when the console powers on, along with an Xbox 25th Anniversary logo on the front.

That detail is clearly meant to bring back memories of the original Xbox startup identity. For players who grew up with the first Xbox, Halo, the Duke controller, and early Xbox Live, the design is meant to feel familiar without simply copying the old hardware.

The controller may be the easier purchase for most fans

The matching Xbox Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition uses the same translucent OG Green style. It also brings back the original ABXY button colors, while the bumpers pay tribute to the black and white buttons from the original Duke controller. The back shell and battery door are fully transparent, revealing a classic Xbox logo inside.

The controller will be sold separately, which is important because many people may want the anniversary design without buying another Xbox Series X. The console will also come bundled with the controller.

The separate controller release may end up being the more popular option. Many Xbox fans already own a Series X, and a cosmetic refresh may not be enough reason to buy a second console. A controller is cheaper, easier to justify, and still gives fans a piece of the anniversary design.

The console design is likely to divide fans

The Xbox Series X25 design is bold, and that means it will not please everyone. Translucent plastic has a strong nostalgic appeal, especially for people who remember special edition consoles from the late 1990s and early 2000s. At the same time, some players prefer their consoles to be simple, black, and quiet looking under a TV.

That split is already easy to understand. The Series X has always been a clean, box like console with a simple design. The X25 version turns it into more of a display piece. The green shell, glowing X, and anniversary logo make it much more noticeable.

For collectors, that is the point. Anniversary hardware is not usually about practicality. It is about owning a version that marks a specific moment in the brand’s history. The fact that Microsoft is using a translucent green look instead of a simple printed logo makes this feel more deliberate.

Still, the 1TB storage decision may disappoint some players. By late 2026, many Xbox players will have large digital libraries, and modern games can take up a lot of space. A 2TB model would have made the anniversary console feel more premium. Microsoft may be trying to keep the price closer to the regular Series X, but without official pricing, that remains unclear.

Xbox is leaning into nostalgia at the right time

The timing makes sense. Xbox has been trying to clarify its identity while balancing consoles, PC, cloud gaming, Game Pass, and multiplatform publishing. A 25th anniversary console is a simple way to remind players of the brand’s roots.

The original Xbox built its identity on power, online play, Halo, and a distinct visual style. Bringing back translucent green gives Microsoft a direct line to that early period. It also helps the company create a physical product that celebrates Xbox as hardware, not only as a service or publishing label.

That matters because many fans still care deeply about Xbox consoles. Even as Microsoft expands beyond traditional hardware, special edition devices like this show that the console side of the business still has cultural value.

The Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition is not a necessary upgrade for existing owners. It does not appear to offer stronger performance, more storage than the regular 1TB model, or new technical features. Its appeal is emotional and collectible.

For longtime fans, that may be enough. The translucent green design, glowing X, anniversary branding, and matching controller make it one of the most nostalgic Xbox hardware releases in years. The controller will likely be the easier buy, but the console should attract collectors who want a physical reminder of Xbox’s first 25 years.
