Xbox is launching a new developer focused video series called Game Dev Update, and the first episode will include more discussion about Project Helix, Microsoft’s next generation Xbox hardware plan. The show is aimed at developers, but many Xbox fans will likely pay attention because Project Helix remains one of the biggest questions around the platform’s future.
The first episode will premiere on May 7, 2026, through the Microsoft Game Dev YouTube channel. The schedule is 9 AM PDT, 12 PM EDT, and 6 PM CEST.
This is not a normal Xbox showcase
Game Dev Update is not built around game trailers or hardware reveals. Microsoft says the show is meant to give developers clearer technical context, platform updates, and explanations from the teams building Xbox tools.
That makes sense because Xbox is preparing for a major platform shift. If Project Helix is coming to developers in 2027, Microsoft needs studios to understand the hardware direction, the toolchain, and the development benefits before consumer marketing begins.
| Topic | What Xbox plans to cover |
|---|---|
| Project Helix | A closer look at the future Xbox hardware platform |
| Developer tools | Updates that help studios build and test games |
| DirectX | A recap of Microsoft’s latest graphics and simulation work |
| DirectStorage | Faster asset loading and storage technology |
| Xbox Marketplace | Store and publishing updates |
| GDC 2026 | A recap of developer focused announcements |
Project Helix will be discussed by Jason Ronald, Xbox VP of next generation hardware, and Chris Charla, general manager of portfolio and programs. Microsoft says Project Helix uses a custom AMD based SoC and is designed with the next generation of DirectX. The goal is to help developers improve performance, optimize build workflows, and iterate faster.
That wording is important. Xbox is not only talking about more powerful hardware. It is also talking about the development process around that hardware. If Microsoft wants the next Xbox platform to feel closer to Windows PC while still keeping the benefits of a console, developer tools will be a major part of the plan.
The episode will also include updates from Xbox staff working on development tools, DirectStorage, Xbox Marketplace changes, and GDC highlights. That makes the show more useful for studios than for casual viewers, but it could still reveal details about how Xbox plans to connect hardware, Windows, DirectX, and publishing.
This also fits the communication shift under Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. Since she took over, Xbox has been more direct with players. Game Dev Update looks like the same approach aimed at developers.

For now, the most interesting part is Project Helix. The hardware is still not fully defined publicly, but every developer focused update gives a better sense of what Microsoft is building. The next Xbox generation may depend as much on tools and platform clarity as raw specs.
