Xbox fans vote for XBOX as Microsoft tests how bold the brand should look

Microsoft may not be changing the Xbox name, but it seems willing to ask how that name should look.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma recently posted a simple poll on X asking fans to choose between “Xbox” and “XBOX.” Nearly 20,000 people voted, and the result was surprisingly clear. About 64.8 percent preferred the all caps “XBOX” style.

That is not a small difference. Almost two thirds of voters picked the louder version of the brand name, even though “Xbox” has been the familiar written style for decades.

Xbox35.2 percent

The result is interesting because Xbox is in the middle of a broader identity shift. Microsoft recently moved away from the “Microsoft Gaming” label and is putting more weight back on Xbox as the main consumer facing brand. That makes even a small branding question feel more meaningful than it normally would.

There is also history behind the all caps look. Xbox console logos have often used an all caps style, so “XBOX” would not feel completely new. It looks stronger, more aggressive, and more visible in marketing.

But it also changes the tone. “Xbox” feels cleaner and more familiar. “XBOX” feels louder, closer to classic gaming hardware branding, and maybe more direct for ads, packaging, and social media.

The poll does not mean Microsoft will officially rename the brand style. Asha Sharma may simply have been testing fan reaction. But the timing is notable. Xbox is preparing for Project Helix, pushing cloud gaming, expanding beyond console, and trying to rebuild confidence under new leadership.

A shift from “Xbox” to “XBOX” would not fix the brand’s biggest problems. It would not answer questions about exclusives, hardware value, or Windows based gaming devices. But branding still matters because it shapes how people recognize and talk about the platform.

For now, the name itself is not going anywhere. Xbox will remain Xbox. The real question is whether Microsoft wants the brand to look softer and familiar, or louder and more assertive.

Based on Sharma’s poll, many fans want the louder version.
