The WD Black SN850X 4TB SSD is finally back at a more reasonable price, giving PC gamers a useful way to deal with massive game installs without paying the full inflated listing price.
The 4TB model with heatsink is currently listed at $653 on Amazon, down from SanDisk’s extreme $1,701.99 listing price. That is still not cheap compared with older SSD pricing, but it is a lot easier to accept than the full price, especially during a year when RAM and storage prices have been climbing.
The SN850X is a PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD built for gaming PCs and PlayStation 5. It offers read speeds up to 7,300MB/s and write speeds up to 6,600MB/s, which is more than enough for fast game loading, large file transfers, and heavy everyday use.
The 4TB capacity is the real appeal. Modern PC games can take up well over 100GB each, and a smaller SSD can fill up quickly once you add Windows, apps, captures, mods, and a few big releases. A 4TB drive gives you much more room before you have to start deleting games to make space.
| WD Black SN850X model | Discounted price |
|---|---|
| 1TB | $258.95 at Amazon |
| 1TB with heatsink | $298.95 at Amazon |
| 2TB | $325.99 at Newegg |
| 2TB with heatsink | $419.69 at Amazon |
| 4TB with heatsink | $653 at Amazon |
| 4TB | $669.99 at Best Buy |
| 8TB with heatsink | $1,349.99 at Amazon |
The heatsink version is worth considering if you plan to use the SSD in a high end gaming PC or a PS5. The drive can run without one in many setups, but a heatsink helps with sustained performance and reduces the chance of thermal throttling during long sessions or large transfers.
The SN850X also supports DirectStorage, which can help compatible games load assets more efficiently by reducing CPU bottlenecks. That matters more as games continue to rely on large worlds, high resolution textures, and faster streaming.
This is not the newest PCIe 5.0 drive, but that is not a problem for most gamers. PCIe 4.0 SSDs like the SN850X are still extremely fast, widely compatible, and usually better value than newer PCIe 5.0 options.
The main downside is still price. Even discounted, $653 is a lot for an SSD. But if your game library is constantly fighting your available storage, this is the kind of upgrade that can make your PC feel less cramped for years.

For most people, the 2TB model is the more affordable sweet spot. But if you want to stop worrying about storage for a long time, the discounted 4TB WD Black SN850X is the more comfortable long term choice.
