Valor Mortis Moves to October as September 2026 Becomes Too Crowded

Valor Mortis has been delayed from September 24 to October 13, 2026, as developer One More Level and publisher Lyrical Games try to move the game away from one of the busiest release windows of the year. The first person melee action game was originally dated during the Xbox Games Showcase, but the team already knew by then that September had become too crowded.

The decision appears to be less about development trouble and more about launch timing. September 2026 has quickly filled with major releases as publishers try to avoid Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set for November 19, 2026. The result is a packed early fall calendar where smaller and mid sized games risk being buried between larger names.

Valor Mortis is now launching in mid October, giving it a little more space and a better chance to find attention.

Control Resonant helped push the date change

According to Lyrical Games, September 24 originally looked like a clear date. That changed when Control Resonant was revealed for the same day during Sony’s State of Play. Once that happened, the team decided Valor Mortis needed to move.

That decision looked even smarter as more Summer Game Fest announcements filled the September calendar. Within just a few days, September became crowded with action games, RPGs, strategy titles, remasters, and major platform releases.

The studio also said it wanted to give Valor Mortis and players’ wallets more room to breathe. That is a practical way to frame the delay because buyers can only give attention and money to so many games at once.

September 2026 has become a problem for publishers

The September window is now filled with games such as Control Resonant, Silent Hill: Townfall, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War IV, Dune Awakening on consoles, Minecraft Dungeons 2, Rayman Legends Retold, and more.

That list does not even include every game close to the window, such as Marvel’s Wolverine earlier in the month. For a new IP or smaller game, launching in that kind of crowd can be risky.

Valor Mortis is not unknown, since it comes from the team behind Ghostrunner. But even that connection may not be enough when the same week includes several bigger brands.

October is still busy, but Valor Mortis has more space

Moving to October 13 does not give Valor Mortis a completely empty runway. October still includes games such as Gears of War: E Day, Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, Planet Zoo 2, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, and Tales of Eternia Remastered.

However, the new week looks more manageable than the September 24 slot. Valor Mortis now has fewer direct clashes on the exact same date and a better chance to stand out as a fast, first person melee action game.

That matters because launch visibility can decide a game’s early success. A strong trailer and good reviews help, but players also need time to notice the game.

GTA 6 is reshaping the entire 2026 release calendar

The bigger story is how much GTA 6 is affecting the market before it even launches. Publishers are trying to avoid November, but that has created a second problem. Too many games are now crowding September and October instead.

This is a common release calendar issue, but GTA 6 makes it more extreme. Almost no publisher wants to release too close to Rockstar’s next game. The result is a chain reaction where everyone looks for safety, and the supposedly safer months become crowded too.

Valor Mortis may be one of the first games to openly move because of that pressure, but it likely will not be the last.

Valor Mortis now has a better chance to find its audience

Valor Mortis is coming from One More Level, the studio best known for Ghostrunner. That gives the game a clear identity. It is a first person action game built around melee combat, speed, and aggressive encounters.

The delay gives the studio a better launch position without moving too far from its original window. That is important because a long delay can weaken momentum, while a short move can protect visibility.

A demo is already available for players during Steam Next Fest, which gives Valor Mortis another way to build interest before launch. If the demo connects with players, the October date could work in the game’s favor.

The delay is not dramatic, but it is smart. Valor Mortis was heading into a crowded week where it could have been drowned out by larger games. By moving to October 13, One More Level and Lyrical Games are giving the game a more realistic chance to be noticed, discussed, and played.
