Until Dawn 2 brings PlayStation’s interactive horror series back with a new cast

Until Dawn 2 is officially in development, and Sony is bringing the interactive survival horror series back with a new story, new characters, and a new developer. The sequel was revealed during Sony’s latest State of Play showcase and is being made by Firesprite, the UK studio Sony acquired in 2021.

The original Until Dawn became popular because it treated horror like an interactive movie. Every choice mattered, and small decisions could decide who survived, who died, and how the story ended. Until Dawn 2 is keeping that same structure, but it will not simply continue with the same group of characters from the first game.

This time, the story follows a crew of ghost hunters who run a popular paranormal channel called Dead True. Their reputation is built on scares, but there is one problem: they have never actually faced anything truly supernatural. That changes when they encounter real horror for the first time and must survive until morning.

The setup is clever because it gives the sequel a modern horror angle. Ghost hunting channels, staged scares, online fame, and fake paranormal content are familiar ideas today. Until Dawn 2 can use that world to create tension between performance and reality. These characters are used to pretending danger exists. Now they have to deal with danger that is actually real.

Like the first game, Until Dawn 2 will use branching storylines and butterfly effects. That means even a small decision can change major parts of the story later. A line of dialogue, a missed clue, a wrong turn, or a risky choice could decide whether someone lives or dies.

That design is what makes this series different from normal horror games. You are not only trying to escape monsters or survive jump scares. You are shaping a horror movie through your own decisions. The pressure comes from knowing that a mistake may not only affect one scene. It may change the ending.

The sequel will also feature recognizable actors playing the main characters and villains. That is important for this type of game because performance, facial animation, and character chemistry matter a lot. Until Dawn worked partly because it felt like a playable teen horror film. Firesprite now has to capture that same dramatic energy with a new cast.

The change in developer is one of the biggest questions. The original Until Dawn was made by Supermassive Games, which later built a whole identity around cinematic horror with games like The Dark Pictures Anthology and The Quarry. Firesprite has worked on VR titles and supported projects such as Horizon Call of the Mountain and Star Citizen, but Until Dawn 2 is expected to be its first major solo project since joining Sony.

That gives the game both risk and opportunity. Firesprite has to prove it can handle a beloved horror format, but it also gets a chance to make the series feel fresh. A new studio, new cast, and new story could help Until Dawn 2 avoid feeling like a simple repeat.

Sony has confirmed that Until Dawn 2 is coming to PlayStation 5 sometime in 2027. No firm release date has been announced yet, and there is no mention of a PC version for now.

The return of Until Dawn makes sense for PlayStation. Horror games have remained popular, and choice driven story games still have a dedicated audience when the writing, acting, and consequences feel strong. If Firesprite can deliver tense choices, memorable characters, and meaningful branching outcomes, Until Dawn 2 could become one of Sony’s more interesting narrative games of 2027.

For now, the reveal gives fans the main promise they wanted: Until Dawn is not finished. The sequel is bringing back the survival horror formula, but with a new ghost hunting crew that may finally learn the difference between fake scares and real nightmares.
