Total War: Shogun 2 Mod Boosts Battle Performance by 50% and Campaign Map FPS by 136%

Total War: Shogun 2 has received a community-developed performance mod that reportedly increases frame rates by approximately 50% during battles, with even larger improvements on the campaign map.

The open-source modification, called s2fix, was developed by Meisgoot312 to address longstanding CPU bottlenecks in the strategy game.

Originally designed for Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition, the mod now supports the original 2011 release after the developer discovered that both versions share similar rendering limitations.

Early benchmarks show substantial improvements in CPU-limited scenarios, although independent testing across different hardware configurations remains limited.

Shogun 2 Mod Improves CPU Rendering and GPU Utilization

Total War: Shogun 2 relies heavily on a single CPU thread for rendering operations, despite supporting multiple processor threads.

This limitation prevents modern graphics cards from reaching their full potential, especially during large battles involving numerous units.

The s2fix modification addresses these problems by introducing several rendering optimizations.

These include multithreaded draw-call submission through DirectX 11 deferred contexts, improved rendering task distribution, more efficient caching, and optimized CPU thread placement.

The original game also receives an updated presentation method intended to improve frame pacing and reduce input latency.

According to developer benchmarks, one test improved from 142 FPS to 210 FPS, representing an increase of approximately 48%.

GPU utilization also reportedly increased from around 40% to between 70% and 80%.

Campaign Map Performance Improves by Up to 136%

The recently released s2fix version 0.2.3 introduces additional optimizations targeting campaign map performance.

The update reduces repeated calculations involving faction relationships and character appearances through improved caching.

One benchmark recorded the following results:

Performance measurementBefore modAfter mod
Battle frame rate142 FPS210 FPS
Campaign map frame rate62.6 FPS148 FPS
GPU utilizationAround 40%70% to 80%

The campaign map improvement represents an increase of approximately 136%.

Additionally, the original game's reported video memory allowance has increased from around 3GB to nearly 4GB.

Mod Supports Original Shogun 2 and Complete Edition

The modification is available in separate versions for the original 32-bit game and the newer 64-bit Complete Edition.

Installation involves extracting the appropriate files into the game's directory, with DirectX 11 required.

Testing has primarily focused on NVIDIA graphics drivers, although compatibility with several popular gameplay modifications has also been reported.

Performance improvements will depend on hardware configurations and existing bottlenecks.

Systems already limited by GPU performance may experience smaller benefits than the developer's reported results.
