TMNT: The Last Ronin is returning in a new form, with PlatinumGames now leading development and Paramount Games Studio positioning the project as a darker, story driven action game. The title was revealed at Summer Game Fest 2026 and is planned for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, although it does not yet have a release window.
The project has had a complicated path. A game based on The Last Ronin was first announced in 2023, but that earlier version was being developed by Black Forest Games. Development on that version was later stopped before the Skydance and Paramount merger. The project has now been reassigned to PlatinumGames, the studio known for fast action titles such as Bayonetta, NieR: Automata, and Ninja Gaiden 4.
That change suggests the final game may feel very different from the version originally imagined. PlatinumGames brings a clear identity built around stylish combat, quick reactions, and deep action systems. However, Paramount Games Studio says the goal is not only to make a typical Platinum action game. The team wants to combine that combat style with western action adventure storytelling.
Paramount wants a mature TMNT story with cinematic weight
TMNT: The Last Ronin is based on one of the darker Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stories. In this version of the world, only one turtle remains. He must defend New York from the Foot Clan and Oroku Hiroto, the grandson of Shredder, who is trying to control the city through fear and violence.
Shawn Kittelsen, who is leading creative and production at Paramount Games Studio, said the team has looked at games such as God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, and Ghost of Yōtei as storytelling inspirations. That points to a more cinematic and emotional structure than fans may expect from a TMNT game.

Kittelsen is also working on the game’s story, marking his first game writing work since Mortal Kombat 11. Paramount also brought in narrative director Mike Rogers to help shape the project.
PlatinumGames is taking on a different kind of action game
PlatinumGames has a long history of making fast, technical action games, but The Last Ronin may require a different balance. The source material is heavier and more emotional than the studio’s usual high energy tone. It is about loss, revenge, legacy, and one final fight against overwhelming odds.
That makes the project interesting. If Platinum leans only on speed and spectacle, the game could lose the weight of The Last Ronin. If it leans too hard into cinematic storytelling, it may lose the sharp combat identity that makes Platinum’s name matter. The challenge is finding the middle ground.
The studio’s experience could still be a strong fit. A lone turtle carrying the memories and tools of his fallen brothers gives the game room for varied combat styles. Different weapons, movement options, and enemy types could make the action feel more layered while still supporting the story.
The Last Ronin could be the TMNT game fans have waited for
TMNT games have often leaned toward co op beat em up action or lighter arcade style fun. The Last Ronin is different. It is built around a darker future and a more personal story, which gives Paramount and Platinum a chance to make a TMNT game for older fans who grew up with the franchise.

That does not mean it needs to abandon the identity of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The best version of The Last Ronin would still carry the heart of the series, including brotherhood, loyalty, humor, grief, and the burden of legacy. The difference is that those themes can now be explored with more emotional weight.
The involvement of a Mortal Kombat 11 writer also suggests Paramount wants the narrative to feel substantial. The game will need strong writing to make the final turtle’s journey matter beyond the action.
Paramount Games Studio is making a serious first impression
The reveal also matters for Paramount Games Studio. The label is new, and TMNT: The Last Ronin gives it a recognizable franchise with a strong creative hook. Reassigning the project to PlatinumGames shows that Paramount wants the game to carry more ambition than a simple licensed release.
There is still a lot we do not know. The game has no release window, and gameplay details remain limited. Fans will want to see how Platinum handles combat, whether the game is linear or semi open, how much story control players have, and how faithfully it adapts the comic.
For now, the pitch is strong. TMNT: The Last Ronin is no longer just another licensed action game. It is being built as a serious, mature take on the franchise with PlatinumGames combat and a cinematic story structure inspired by some of the biggest action adventure games of the last decade.
If the team can balance those parts, The Last Ronin could become the most ambitious TMNT game ever made.
