A Radeon RX 7900 XTX owner has reported damage involving melted 8 pin PCIe power connectors while using a Thermal Grizzly WireView adapter. The case is unusual because traditional 8 pin GPU connectors are generally considered less problematic than newer 16 pin power designs, but this incident shows that they are still capable of overheating when electrical contact is poor.
The owner had reportedly experienced black screens and system freezes for several months before inspecting the graphics card more closely. During an attempt to reinstall the GPU, the WireView adapter was difficult to remove.
After examining the hardware, the owner discovered visible melting around two of the three 8 pin connectors connected to the graphics card.

Two connectors showed significant heat damage
Photos shared by the owner appear to show damage to several pins and surrounding plastic on the male side of the WireView adapter.
The melting was serious enough that removing the adapter from the GPU became difficult. The owner said the connectors had originally been inserted fully and felt tight, which makes the exact cause uncertain.
Images of the graphics card's own connector housing were not provided, so the extent of any damage on the GPU itself cannot be confirmed. The card also does not appear to have suffered an immediate permanent failure, although repeated freezes and black screens suggest that the power connection may have been unstable before the problem was discovered.
Thermal Grizzly responded to the incident and asked the owner to contact its support team so the case could be investigated.
The company indicated that this type of damage can occur when a connector does not make proper contact. A loose or incomplete electrical connection can create increased resistance. That resistance produces heat as current passes through the affected area, potentially damaging the connector housing.
8 pin connectors are not completely protected from overheating
Much of the recent attention around damaged GPU power connectors has focused on 16 pin designs used by high power graphics cards. Traditional 8 pin PCIe connectors have a longer history and are generally regarded as more tolerant.
That does not make them immune to failure.
Any high current connector can overheat if the pins are damaged, poorly seated, contaminated or making insufficient contact. Additional adapters also introduce more connection points where resistance can develop.

This particular case does not establish a broader defect with WireView adapters or 8 pin PCIe connectors. It represents a single reported incident, and the exact cause has not yet been confirmed.
If you use a high power graphics card, unusual black screens, freezing, a burning smell or unexpected connector temperatures should be taken seriously. Checking that every power connector is fully inserted and inspecting cables and adapters periodically can help identify problems before significant heat damage develops.
The incident is a useful reminder that older 8 pin connectors can also fail under the wrong conditions, even though reports of this type remain relatively uncommon.
