The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s upcoming Songs of the Past expansion will bring more than a new story. CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the 2027 DLC will also add new Gwent cards, giving longtime players another reason to return to one of the game’s most loved side activities. The studio also says cross platform mod support is still in development, although it has not shared a release date yet.
The update came during a Q&A tied to The Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine anniversary stream, where developers discussed what players can expect from Songs of the Past. When asked about Gwent, CD Projekt Red made the answer simple: more Gwent is coming.
That may sound like a small detail, but for many Witcher fans, Gwent is a major part of the game’s identity. The card game started as a side activity, but it became one of the most memorable systems in The Witcher 3. Players spent hours collecting cards, challenging merchants, beating nobles, and building stronger decks across the Continent.
Songs of the Past is becoming more than just another story expansion
The confirmation of new Gwent cards suggests Songs of the Past is being treated as a proper return to The Witcher 3 rather than a small bonus update. CD Projekt Red has already described the expansion as large in scope and familiar to players who loved Blood and Wine. New cards, a meaningful sword tied to the story, and continued mod support all point toward a bigger package.
| Feature | Current status |
|---|---|
| New Gwent cards | Confirmed for Songs of the Past |
| Cross platform mod support | Still in development |
| Original mod support target | Planned for 2025 before delay |
| Current mod support window | Delayed to 2026 |
| Songs of the Past release | Planned for 2027 |
| The Witcher 4 | In full production with Ciri as lead |
Cross platform mod support is still one of the bigger unanswered questions. The feature was originally planned for PC and consoles in 2025, but CD Projekt Red later moved it to 2026. The studio has now repeated that it is still working on it, which should reassure players who worried the feature had quietly disappeared.

That matters because mod support could extend The Witcher 3’s life even further. PC players have enjoyed mods for years, but bringing broader support across platforms could give console players access to a more flexible version of the game. If handled well, it could make The Witcher 3 feel fresh again before Songs of the Past arrives.
The expansion is also becoming more interesting because of how it connects to the future of the franchise. CD Projekt Red has said Songs of the Past will launch before The Witcher 4, which is now in full production and will star Ciri as the main witcher. The studio has been careful not to call the expansion a direct prequel, but it has described it as a kind of reminder of the franchise before the next mainline game.
There is also a story tease around Geralt’s sword in the expansion artwork. Developers confirmed that the weapon is important to the story, although they are not giving away details yet. That should fuel more speculation about whether Songs of the Past will connect to Ciri, Geralt’s later life, or events that help set the mood for The Witcher 4.
For now, the new Gwent cards are the clearest fan service detail. They show CD Projekt Red understands what players still love about The Witcher 3. The expansion does not need to reinvent the game. It needs to bring players back into a world they already care about and give them meaningful reasons to stay.
Songs of the Past is still some time away, but the pieces are starting to come together. A large expansion, new Gwent cards, cross platform mod support, and a story important sword all make this feel like a major return to The Witcher 3 before the series moves into its Ciri led future.
