GTA 6 will launch first on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with PC coming later. Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has now given a clearer reason for that choice: Rockstar starts with consoles because that is where it believes its core audience is.
Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg, Zelnick said Rockstar is judged by how well it serves its core audience. In his view, if that audience is not served first and best, the launch does not hit the same way with everyone else.
Rockstar still sees console players as the first priority
This is not presented as a special deal with Sony or Microsoft. Zelnick said Rockstar has historically gone to consoles first, and he framed the decision as a Rockstar specific approach rather than a Take Two wide rule.
That distinction matters because other Take Two games do very well on PC. Zelnick reportedly noted that some 2K releases, such as NBA 2K, can get 40% to 50% of sales from PC players. Rockstar’s biggest games are different because the studio still treats console players as the center of the launch strategy.
| GTA 6 launch detail | Current status |
|---|---|
| Planned release date | November 19, 2026 |
| Launch platforms | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X |
| PC version | Coming later, not at launch |
| Stated reason | Rockstar serves console players first |
| Platform deal claim | Zelnick says it is not about console maker relationships |
That answer may not satisfy PC players. GTA has a huge PC audience, and a day one PC release would likely bring in even more sales at launch. But Rockstar’s pattern has been consistent. GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 also came to consoles first and PC later.

There are still practical reasons a PC version may take longer. A game like GTA 6 has to support a wide range of hardware, settings, drivers, CPUs, GPUs, storage speeds, and display setups. Consoles give Rockstar fewer hardware targets at launch, which can make it easier to focus on polish.
Zelnick also acknowledged the pressure around GTA 6. The game is expected to be one of the largest entertainment launches ever, and Take Two has spent years building toward it. He described the expectations around the game as both exciting and terrifying.
For console players, the message is simple. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S remain first in line. For PC players, the wait continues, even though the PC version will likely be a major release when it arrives.
The decision may frustrate part of the audience, but it shows how Rockstar still thinks about its biggest launches. GTA 6 is being built around the console launch first, and Take Two is comfortable with that strategy even with the scale of the game.
