Studio MDHR is returning to Cuphead with two new games, giving fans both a fresh pixel art experiment and a more familiar hand drawn action platformer. The studio revealed the projects during Summer Game Fest, confirming that Cuphead is expanding in two different directions after years of steady popularity from the original game and its Delicious Last Course expansion.
The first project is Cuphead Mighty Adventure, an 8 bit style platformer that looks like a different take on the series. Instead of following the exact boss rush and run and gun structure that defined Cuphead, Mighty Adventure appears to move closer to a classic side scrolling platformer. Its pixel art style also gives it a separate identity from the hand animated look that made the first game so recognizable.
The second project is closer to what many players would expect from Studio MDHR. It is another hand drawn animated action platformer, built in the visual tradition of Cuphead and The Delicious Last Course. This game is still in the early stages of development, so the studio is not ready to share much about its final shape, release timing, or gameplay systems.
Cuphead Mighty Adventure looks further along than the hand drawn project
The reveal suggests that Cuphead Mighty Adventure may arrive before the next hand drawn Cuphead game. While no release date was announced for either project, Mighty Adventure looked further along than the second game, which was clearly described as being early in development.
That makes sense for Studio MDHR. The first Cuphead took years to complete because of its demanding animation style, where every frame had to match the spirit of old cartoons. A pixel art platformer may allow the team to explore Cuphead’s world in a smaller or faster format while the larger hand drawn project continues development.
| Game | Style | Current status |
|---|---|---|
| Cuphead Mighty Adventure | 8 bit pixel art platformer | Appears further along |
| New hand drawn Cuphead game | Animated action platformer | Early in development |
| Original Cuphead | Hand drawn run and gun action | Released in 2017 |
| The Delicious Last Course | Expansion for Cuphead | Released in 2022 |
Studio MDHR is taking its time instead of rushing the franchise
Studio MDHR does not appear to be forcing Cuphead into a yearly release schedule. The studio remains a smaller independent team, and the original Cuphead continues to sell and attract new players years after launch. That gives the developers more room to work carefully rather than rush new games to market.

The long gap also shows how difficult this series can be to make. Without The Delicious Last Course in 2022, players would be close to a decade without a new Cuphead release since the original game arrived. That wait has helped turn any new Studio MDHR announcement into a major moment for fans of animation, platformers, and difficult action games.
The two game strategy is interesting because it lets the studio protect what made Cuphead famous while also trying something different. Mighty Adventure can test how the characters and world work in a retro platforming format, while the hand drawn project can continue the premium animation style that made Studio MDHR stand out in the first place.
There are still many unanswered questions. Platforms have not been clearly detailed, release dates are missing, and the studio has not shown enough to explain how either game will handle difficulty, co op, boss fights, or progression. Still, the announcement confirms that Cuphead is no longer only one game and one expansion. Studio MDHR is now building the franchise in two directions, and both could appeal to different parts of the same audience.
