How to turn off Facebook sounds on Android and iPhone
Is Facebook making sounds on your smartphone that are driving you crazy? How do you turn off Facebook sounds on Android or iOS? It’s no secret that the Facebook app can be noisy, alerting you (and everyone else nearby) with every post or like. Recent updates from Meta even introduced bugs causing the Facebook app to chirp as you scroll. Annoying, right? Well, the good news is that you can silence them in seconds. However, finding these settings isn’t exactly straightforward. Having played hide-and-seek with Facebook for years, I’ve kept this guide updated with the latest instructions. Here’s how to turn off FB sounds on an iPhone or an Android phone: NOTE: To create this tutorial, I used a Google Pixel 6a running Android 14, a Samsung Galaxy A54 5G running One UI 6.0 (Android 14), and an iPhone 12 mini running iOS 17.4. Every smartphone had all the available system updates and the latest version of the Facebook app available to download from Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store, respectively.

Should there be an easier way to turn off Facebook sounds?

Now you know how to turn off Facebook sounds if they also make you feel like you’re playing a mobile game instead of using an app to keep in touch with your friends. Whenever I start using the Facebook app on a new mobile device, it only takes a few seconds before I want to turn off the sounds. What about you? How much do you dislike those pesky Facebook chirping sounds? Do you think the process of disabling them is overly complicated? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Lately, the Reels section at the top next to the feed button starts playing the Reel video immediately and then continues on to the next and the next and so forth. You used to be able to select which ones you wanted to play. Now it just starts running with no control.

In Messenger, even after turning off sounds and notifications, the app still chirps when you send a message and you hear a sound effect when the other party is typing. I’ve found no way to turn that off?

Your 2 solutions may work for certain users but Facebook have clearly altered the menu structure and headings depending on some random criteria to deter people from turning off video and audio autoplay. The setup on my android phone is completely different to both your examples. I found it in the end but it is buried deep in the menus.
This is cynical (but not surprising I guess). How many phones you’d have to try to cover all the possible combos I don’t know and it’s probably a moving picture anyway. It’s feeding my growing disenchantment with Facebook though.

Really? They did that? Again. What they’re doing is nasty. We’ve updated this guide so many times, and they keep changing and moving things. 🙁

Thank you so much for the instructions on how to turn off the sound when posting a comment or adding a ‘like’ etc. There was nothing obvious about how to do it. The step by step was right on target!! So glad to be able to get rid of that annoying noise!!

Nope. The Media category under Settings & Privacy>Settings for Android doesn’t exist anymore. They’ve updated it. Do some research. Facebook REALLY doesn’t want you to be able to access these things!

    1. Ciprian Adrian Rusen
      Ciprian Adrian Rusen

Hi Rich. We just updated the guide, and we found two different solutions for Android users. It seems that Facebook is making experiments with burying these settings in completely different places, based on the phone you’re using. Really strange!

There is no “Media” option under “Preferences.” I’ve gone into “Notifications” multiple times and supposedly turned everything off, but my android phone still chimes when anyone comments on Facebook.

There is one more step if you have multiple profiles linked in your Facebook account, like a personal and a business profile (which I hate but what can you do). After opening main Settings go to Profile Settings and then the options will be under Media and Contacts. Oy!

There is NO menu item for Media or for Sounds on the Facebook app for iPhones now. The ONLY way to find the Sounds toggle is to search for it. You NEED to update your article so it makes it clear that you can no longer find these items in the Settings menu, and can only find them by searching Settings.

I HATE FACEBOOK. Please, someone come out with a better social media app that leaves Mark Zuckerberg in the poorhouse where he belongs.

These sounds WERE so obnoxious! Until I read your article & implemented the steps. I have a Google Pixel 2 & almost NOTHING anyone suggests on the internet to fix anything ever works so thank you.
I agree it’s our choice to download/use FB. What I disagree with is their decision to basically have us advertise for them by doing something as obnoxious as announcing to the world that we are using their app. We did not want in the first place. Making it so hard to turn off further confirms my suspicions that FB is just trying to take over the world, no matter the cost to anyone’s privacy.

I really wish the default was the sound was off, and if people want sounds they should be the ones who have to navigate to shut them. I have hearing aids and my phone sounds go through them. The FB sounds are sooo loud for me, yet if I lower my volume then I miss sounds in speech that I need to be able to hear conversations.

Absolutely assholes. I’m not a tech savy (ok maybe a little) but I know my way around in situations like this. But not this . I was trying get rid of the fricking pop sound since I got my new phone.

Facebook has been known to try annoying features on their users hard to rub off for years. They have their own agenda. But this is absolute horseshit.

Thank you guys. I was one tick away deleting the app (maybe I and everyone should. We need a new platform for sure.

I just discovered your attempt to provide a solution to this pining/popping/click/dinging bothersome ‘noise’ for every like/comment…any action I partake whilst engaging in FB. I have an Android. I followed your clear steps and, to absolutely NO avail, “Cellular Data Usage” does not appear. No such option exists. I have no control what-so-ever to turn off the friggin ‘noise trash/chatter’. Nada. None. Zilch. FB = deception. I know many folks who have left FB…I am close to following their lead. I don’t NEED FB, or the tactics of their ‘chaser-prey’ game.

I have the new S21 Ultra – this does not exist in my options. Instead of the option for cellular data it has an option to find wifi, which does nothing to fix this.

I also have the old S10 plus 5g, it uses the old method of going into media.

I have just deleted FB for now. If they want to fix this issue I’ll install it again.

I am always off wifi. I’ve deleted and reinstalled the app while off wifi and still the option is not anywhere to be found. I’ve silenced my system media sounds but the facebook bubble sound is still loud and clear!! So frustrating!!! Why can’t this just be a simple thing, especially when so many people are annoyed by it!

I have a Samsung S10,and none of these solutions work. 6/19/21 I’ve gone through this solution, as well as other and previous solutions, and none will work.in most cases, I no longer have the referred to sections in my settings. I’m not a tech expert, but I’m pretty end-user-savvy. I went as far as leaving a 1-star rating with explanation in the google app store. I truly don’t think Facebook cares.

If anyone has found an even more current work—-around to the sounds, PLEASE post it. It seems like every time a work-around is figured out, Facebook takes it away. I’m beyond frustrated that such a small thing would be so difficult!

I had to factory reset my Google pixel in May 2021 and in trying to follow all the online tutorials, AND the in app FB tutorial under help, it says the same instructions you’ve provided. Yet, there is no sounds nor in app sounds option under media. I’m so irritated with all the pings and blips. I reported to FB under help and support and provided a screen shot of the menu, but they haven’t responded. They have responded on the past with help in other situations. This comment section is the first I’ve seen others having the same issues. I feel validated in my annoyance.
