Wondering how to turn off Facebook sounds on Android or iOS? For some reason, the Facebook app is designed to play annoying sounds that alert you (and everyone else around) whenever you post or like something. However, if you find them too loud and are sick of hearing them all the time, you can mute Facebook sounds in seconds. That is, if you know where to look, because these settings are far from obvious. Lucky for you, we’ve been playing hide-and-seek with Facebook for a few years, so we’re constantly updating this guide with the latest instructions to help you mute it. If you’re an Android user, make sure to try out both solutions. So, without further ado, here’s how to turn off the sound on Facebook on your Android smartphone or tablet and your iPhone or iPad:
NOTE: To create this tutorial, we used a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, a Samsung Galaxy S22, and a Google Pixel 4a running Android 12, as well as an iPhone 12 mini running on iOS 15.6. Every smartphone had all the available system updates and the latest version of the Facebook app available to download from Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store, respectively.
How to turn off Facebook sounds on Android (solution 1)
The Facebook sound settings are somewhat buried in the Android app’s menus. Launch the Facebook app on your Android smartphone or tablet, and then tap on the hamburger button in the top-right corner.
Press the hamburger button in the top-right
Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and tap on Settings & privacy.
Open the Facebook Settings & privacy
Then, tap on the first option from the list: Settings.
In the list of Facebook settings, under Preferences, tap on Media.
Access Media for the option to turn off FB sounds
The Facebook sound settings are shown at the bottom of the next screen, in the “Video and Photo Settings” section. Tap on the “Sounds in the app” option to disable the switch next to it and turn off sounds in the Facebook app.

This turns the Facebook sounds off, letting you interact with the popular app on your Android smartphone without any auditive disturbances you never asked for.
TIP: Disabling the Facebook in-app sounds does not stop videos from loudly playing when you come across them in your feed. So, to avoid any loud noises and check Facebook unobserved, we recommend either enabling “Never Autoplay Videos” or turning off the “Videos Start With Sound” option under Autoplay, as seen below.

How to turn off Facebook sounds on Android (solution 2)
Thanks to our readers, our team noticed that the sound settings were in completely different places in the Facebook app, in spite of the fact that we were using the same app version on different Android devices (from the same manufacturer!). For example, on a Samsung Galaxy S22, the Facebook app displayed the in-app sound settings in an entirely different place than on a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. We don’t know why. Most probably, Facebook is experimenting with different approaches for different users. Therefore, if the instructions from the previous section don’t work for you, try these steps:
In the Facebook app, tap on your profile icon in the top-right corner, as highlighted in the screenshot below.
Tap on your profile icon from the top-right
You see all kinds of shortcuts to things like events, friends, and groups. Scroll down until you see Settings & privacy and tap on it to extend this section. Then, tap Settings.
Expand Settings & privacy and tap on Settings
Next, tap on the Profile settings button next to your profile picture. Don’t scroll down, as you won’t find the Media shortcut from the previous solution.
Tap on Profile settings
Now you see a long list of settings, starting with Privacy. Scroll down until you see Media and contacts and tap on it.
Scroll down and tap on Media and contacts
Finally, you see the sound controls you are looking for. Make sure to disable the switches for:
- Videos in News Feed start with sound - ensures that you won’t bother anyone while you scroll through your Facebook news feed.
- Sounds in the app - turns off the sounds Facebook makes when interacting with the app and the items from your news feed.
If you want to save your mobile data while using Facebook, it’s also a good idea to tap Autoplay and select “Never Autoplay Videos.” This way, the videos from your news feed are played only after you tap on the Play button, instead of automatically. As a result, they won’t play any unexpected sounds and won’t eat up your mobile data.
