Wondering how to turn off Facebook sounds on Android or iOS? For some reason, the Facebook app is designed to play annoying sounds that alert you (and everyone else around) whenever you post or like something. If you find them too loud, and you’re sick of hearing them all the time, you can mute Facebook sounds in a matter of seconds if you know where to look. Here’s how to turn off Facebook sounds on your Android smartphone or tablet and your iPhone or iPad:
- Turn off the Wi-Fi and enable Mobile Data on your Android smartphone.
- Open the Facebook app.
- Tap the hamburger button in the top-right corner.
- Scroll down and tap on the Settings & Privacy option.
- Then, press Cellular Data Usage.
- Tap the “Sounds in the app” option and turn off Facebook sounds.
The Facebook sound settings are buried deep in the app’s menus, and you can see them ONLY if you use mobile data on your Android smartphone. We’re not kidding! After Facebook’s recent app updates, the setting to turn off Facebook sounds is displayed ONLY after turning off the Wi-Fi and enabling the mobile data. If you have opened the Facebook app before disabling the Wi-Fi, close the app, enable the Mobile data from Quick Settings, and then relaunch the Facebook app.
In the Facebook app for Android, tap on the hamburger button (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner. Scroll down to the bottom and tap on the Settings & Privacy option to open a dropdown menu. Then, press on Cellular Data Usage. If you don’t see this option, close the Facebook app and follow the instructions at the beginning of this chapter.
First, you see some Video Quality settings. Scroll down to the very bottom of the list to find the “Sounds in the app” option. Tap its switch to disable it and turn off Facebook sounds. You may also want to turn off “Videos Start with Sounds” while you’re here.
Finally, you can now interact with the Facebook app on your Android smartphone without the constant soundtrack of annoying Facebook sounds. Another positive is that your settings remain the same when you turn on the Wi-Fi on your smartphone.
We don’t know why Facebook has decided to move this setting to such a hard to find location. They may move it back where it used to be in future app updates. If that’s the case, we would like to share its previous location to ensure this guide remains helpful. In previous Facebook app versions, the setting was buried under: “Settings & Privacy -> Settings -> Media and Contacts.”
This location made a bit more sense, and the “Sounds in the App” switch was alongside other general settings about handling media content in the Facebook app.
Hopefully, the developers from Facebook will fix this problem for their Android app and stop annoying their users needlessly.
If you want to know how to turn off sounds on Facebook for iOS, the steps are a lot more intuitive than on Android. Open the Facebook app on your iPhone or iPad and tap on the hamburger button in the lower-right corner (three horizontal lines). Scroll down, tap the Settings & Privacy dropdown menu, and access Settings.
Scroll down the available Facebook settings to get to the “Media and Contacts” section. Then, press Sounds.
Tap on the In-App Sound switch to turn it off, and mute Facebook sounds. If you want to check your Facebook feed without drawing attention, we also recommend turning off the “Videos in News Feed Start With Sound” option underneath.
Your settings are immediately applied. You can now resume using the Facebook app on your iPhone without any annoying sounds.
The sounds used by the Facebook app make us feel like we’re playing a mobile game, not using an app for keeping in touch with people. Whenever we start using the app on a new mobile device, we want to turn off the sounds after the first few seconds. Before closing this tutorial, tell us why you dislike these in-app sounds. Don’t you think disabling them is way too complicated? Did you rage a bit, like we did, when we finally found where they buried this setting on their Android app?
