Lately, the Reels section at the top next to the feed button starts playing the Reel video immediately and then continues on to the next and the next and so forth. You used to be able to select which ones you wanted to play. Now it just starts running with no control.

In Messenger, even after turning off sounds and notifications, the app still chirps when you send a message and you hear a sound effect when the other party is typing. I’ve found no way to turn that off?

  • Jason says:

Thanks so much! The bleeping noises were really loud and annoying. It should be much easier to do this

  • Mike says:

Your 2 solutions may work for certain users but Facebook have clearly altered the menu structure and headings depending on some random criteria to deter people from turning off video and audio autoplay. The setup on my android phone is completely different to both your examples. I found it in the end but it is buried deep in the menus.
This is cynical (but not surprising I guess). How many phones you’d have to try to cover all the possible combos I don’t know and it’s probably a moving picture anyway. It’s feeding my growing disenchantment with Facebook though.

    • Ciprian Adrian Rusen says:

Really? They did that? Again. What they’re doing is nasty. We’ve updated this guide so many times, and they keep changing and moving things. 🙁

  • Charlie says:

Thank you so much for the instructions on how to turn off the sound when posting a comment or adding a ‘like’ etc. There was nothing obvious about how to do it. The step by step was right on target!! So glad to be able to get rid of that annoying noise!!

  • Rich says:

Nope. The Media category under Settings & Privacy>Settings for Android doesn’t exist anymore. They’ve updated it. Do some research. Facebook REALLY doesn’t want you to be able to access these things!

    • Ciprian Adrian Rusen says:

Hi Rich. We just updated the guide, and we found two different solutions for Android users. It seems that Facebook is making experiments with burying these settings in completely different places, based on the phone you’re using. Really strange!

  • Fred says:

There is no “Media” option under “Preferences.” I’ve gone into “Notifications” multiple times and supposedly turned everything off, but my android phone still chimes when anyone comments on Facebook.

  • Lindsay says:

There is one more step if you have multiple profiles linked in your Facebook account, like a personal and a business profile (which I hate but what can you do). After opening main Settings go to Profile Settings and then the options will be under Media and Contacts. Oy!

  • Steve Brown says:

There is NO menu item for Media or for Sounds on the Facebook app for iPhones now. The ONLY way to find the Sounds toggle is to search for it. You NEED to update your article so it makes it clear that you can no longer find these items in the Settings menu, and can only find them by searching Settings.

I HATE FACEBOOK. Please, someone come out with a better social media app that leaves Mark Zuckerberg in the poorhouse where he belongs.

  • Dj says:

Update your details. It is old. Cellular option does not show. Go directly into media option and turn off

  • LauraG says:

These sounds WERE so obnoxious! Until I read your article & implemented the steps. I have a Google Pixel 2 & almost NOTHING anyone suggests on the internet to fix anything ever works so thank you.
I agree it’s our choice to download/use FB. What I disagree with is their decision to basically have us advertise for them by doing something as obnoxious as announcing to the world that we are using their app. We did not want in the first place. Making it so hard to turn off further confirms my suspicions that FB is just trying to take over the world, no matter the cost to anyone’s privacy.

  • nim says:

    thankyou very much.
I don’t turn off wifi but that setting at there.

  • Nikki B. says:

    THANK YOU
    THANK YOU
    THANK YOU!!!!
I’ve been pulling my damned hair out trying to get rid of these annoying sounds!
What a stupid place to hide this option!

  • Kathleen Davis says:

Thank you so much for posting this article. Facebook has hidden so many controls and I could not find any information about how to turn the sounds off for my Android phone on their so-called “help” site.

  • BionicBEB says:

I really wish the default was the sound was off, and if people want sounds they should be the ones who have to navigate to shut them. I have hearing aids and my phone sounds go through them. The FB sounds are sooo loud for me, yet if I lower my volume then I miss sounds in speech that I need to be able to hear conversations.

  • Jean says:

Thank you SO much. I Facebook in bed and the bings were driving hubby nuts. Thanks for saving our relationship 🙂

  • Llethander says:

Thanks for this. I was getting really frustrated trying to find this setting in the actual Settings. Why the [expletive deleted] did someone think a general application setting should be in a location specific to cellular data? Talk about braindead designers…

  • Stephen says:

This is ridiculous, so hard to find and seems to turn off all phone sounds. Can’t toggle system sounds.

    • Stephen says:

I can’t believe that turning the sound off in the Facebook app turns off all the sounds on my S9. Facebook should not be allowed to do this.

  • jirtropolis says:

Thank you so much, this was a relief to find and turn off. FB settings have always been hard to manage, not cool on their part to hide this.

  • Muzaffer Bayraktar says:

Absolutely assholes. I’m not a tech savy (ok maybe a little) but I know my way around in situations like this. But not this . I was trying get rid of the fricking pop sound since I got my new phone.

Facebook has been known to try annoying features on their users hard to rub off for years. They have their own agenda. But this is absolute horseshit.

Thank you guys. I was one tick away deleting the app (maybe I and everyone should. We need a new platform for sure.

  • Brad says:

Thanks for the help. I never would have guessed turning off sounds was in the Cellular Usage folder ?

  • Mostafa says:

    Thank you very much!!

  • SunFlower says:

I just discovered your attempt to provide a solution to this pining/popping/click/dinging bothersome ‘noise’ for every like/comment…any action I partake whilst engaging in FB. I have an Android. I followed your clear steps and, to absolutely NO avail, “Cellular Data Usage” does not appear. No such option exists. I have no control what-so-ever to turn off the friggin ‘noise trash/chatter’. Nada. None. Zilch. FB = deception. I know many folks who have left FB…I am close to following their lead. I don’t NEED FB, or the tactics of their ‘chaser-prey’ game.

  • Dianagenta Critic says:

OMG thank you!!! It was driving me nuts.

  • Jeremy says:

I have the new S21 Ultra – this does not exist in my options. Instead of the option for cellular data it has an option to find wifi, which does nothing to fix this.

I also have the old S10 plus 5g, it uses the old method of going into media.

I have just deleted FB for now. If they want to fix this issue I’ll install it again.

  • SEC says:

Thank you so much, this has been annoying the crap out of me for over a ween know, since Facebook updated on my phone and felt like it should change my settings. These noises were making me mad and you are the only search that gave the right answer. Thanks a million.

  • Kimberly McElyea says:

I am always off wifi. I’ve deleted and reinstalled the app while off wifi and still the option is not anywhere to be found. I’ve silenced my system media sounds but the facebook bubble sound is still loud and clear!! So frustrating!!! Why can’t this just be a simple thing, especially when so many people are annoyed by it!

    • Ciprian Adrian Rusen says:

We’ve tried our guide on three Android smartphones, and it worked as we described. Sorry we can’t help more.

      • Jenn Cheng says:

I have a Samsung S10,and none of these solutions work. 6/19/21 I’ve gone through this solution, as well as other and previous solutions, and none will work.in most cases, I no longer have the referred to sections in my settings. I’m not a tech expert, but I’m pretty end-user-savvy. I went as far as leaving a 1-star rating with explanation in the google app store. I truly don’t think Facebook cares.

If anyone has found an even more current work—-around to the sounds, PLEASE post it. It seems like every time a work-around is figured out, Facebook takes it away. I’m beyond frustrated that such a small thing would be so difficult!

  • Dan Lynch says:

I have been beating my head on the desk for awhile now. How bizarre. Thanks a bunch.

  • Adrian Berloth says:

Cellular data option does not show up on my phone. This is driving me crazy. Please help!

  • Teri says:

I don’t have that option on my mobile app android ?

  • Mark says:

I just re-uploaded my app on Android in an attempt to restore the missing dark mode, now it is making those irritating pop sounds as I like and post, but the sound option is also missing from my settings.

  • Michael de Gier says:

Was getting mad over the option disappearing in the Android app, then I found the solution: turn off ALL system sounds in the Volume settings in the Audio section of Android. After all, what system sound do we ever really need? Anyway, found peace at last!

    • Dana says:

This is the only thing that seems to work since no Facebook setting can be found… Thank you! This was driving me crazy!

  • Rod D says:

My android app does not have the sounds in app line. There are a few missing as compared to yours. These noises are annoying! Help! I updated the app and now am stuck with noises

    • Ciprian Adrian Rusen says:

It looks like this feature has been removed from the latest version of the Facebook app. We looked it up, and it just seems to be gone. Nowhere to be found.

  • Andrew Scott says:

The same here as with everyone else. The option doesn’t exist on android.

  • Jean says:

There is no longer an app sound option. May 8,2021.

  • APett says:

I had to factory reset my Google pixel in May 2021 and in trying to follow all the online tutorials, AND the in app FB tutorial under help, it says the same instructions you’ve provided. Yet, there is no sounds nor in app sounds option under media. I’m so irritated with all the pings and blips. I reported to FB under help and support and provided a screen shot of the menu, but they haven’t responded. They have responded on the past with help in other situations. This comment section is the first I’ve seen others having the same issues. I feel validated in my annoyance.

  • Walter Swaim says:

I have the android version installed as of 5-6-2021 and the sounds section on and and all do down menus is entirely absent.

  • Beth says:

My Samsung Galaxy s10e, does not offer a “sounds” button to turn off noises when using FB. Nothing under media and contacts. ?

  • Angela says:

Any update on how to fix this!? I’m desperate! That stupid sound is killing me!
    5/5/21

  • Bonnie Almberg says:

My media and contacts does not have the option to turn off in app sounds.Facebook is updated. ?

  • Joe says:

It doesn’t work anymore. The last screenshot showing the in-app sounds has been removed.

  • Logan Quinsey says:

Facebook has gotten rid of the “Sounds in the App” toggle. Now there’s no way to turn sound effects off at all?

This is absurd, I’m not using this piece of shit app if I can’t turn the sound effects off.

    • Kim says:

This option is no longer available after Android update. There is no “Sounds in the App” under Media. The sound is so load and annoying!

  • Tegrautin says:

My app settings look nothing like that and I still can’t figure out how to turn the in app sounds off! Samsung Galaxy S21, Facebook app version 315.0.0.47.113. Please help!

  • JP says:

I had to delete my FB app to make room for a long video for my daughter to edit, and when I reinstalled (late April 2021) the Turn Off Sounds option is GONE. This makes FB sooo cringey to use now.

  • Patrick says:

This option is not in my phone, I have the Samsung Note 10, can someone please help?

  • Dutch says:

With the latest version of FB for Android (v315?) this option has definitively disappeared and sounds are now always ON, which is terribly annoying also because the volume control to damp the noise affects other apps in your phone.

  • Carol Lewis says:

On my new Samsung S20 fe,using the Facebook app the Facebook settings under Media and Contacts does NOT have a Sound In App option to turn off those awful noises. Every one says to toggle it off but it isn’t there. Please advise.

  • Julie says:

    Way too complicated!
And now for some reason when I follow your excellent tutorial my ‘media and contacts’ option does not offer a ‘sounds’ toggle, only ‘videos start with sound’ toggle.
    FTS.
Thanks for your help. And thank you for nothing, Facebook!

  • Marty says:

There is no option to turn the sound off. Browser, here I come lol

    • Shannon says:

No longer works! Please help this is driving me crazy and just started happening yesterday. I can’t find any solution. I even reloaded the app. That didn’t work. I can’t find anything.

    • Ciprian Adrian Rusen says:

It looks like Facebook has completely removed this option from their mobile app. We just can’t find this setting anywhere. 🙁

  • Danmy says:

    Yes this no longer works.
Facebook have removed the option. I’m getting to the point wherr I can no longer use the app. Even turning phone volume off does not shut it up.

  • In PA says:

“What if there is no sound option? How do you shut off in app sound. I have followed your steps, but the option now as of 4/22/2021 is no where to be found.” SAME HERE and it just started this week on my phone!

  • Erim says:

What if there is no sound option? How do you shut off in app sound. I have followed your steps, but the option now as of 4/22/2021 is no where to be found.

  • Patrik Sjöstrand says:

This is no longer a valid solution. There is no “sound in the app” button to be found anywhere in the Facebook songs anymore. It’s been like this for a while now.

    • Monica says:

This works if you follow the steps exactly like it says. I got a new Android last week and stopped liking friends’ posts because of the annoying sound. Sound on shouldn’t be the default on this app, especially for hitting the like button. Thank goodness these folks posted these instructions, and they worked!

  • Scott says:

Same here. No longer have an option to turn off that terrible pop on Android.

  • matt says:

under settings on my android 11 pixel 4a i have a “media” option but not “media and contacts” and the only sound option under it is to toggle videos starting with sound. i still get a beep whenever i react to a post. any ideas?

  • Oliver Hudson says:

I’ve done all the above (I have iPhone) and Facebook is still making sounds whenever I like something, and they seem to be getting louder even if I turn my volume down! Any ideas please?

    • Ciprian Adrian Rusen says:

Turn off also “Videos in News Feed Start with Sound”, close the app after both sound settings are turned off, and restart it. It should work.

  • Dave says:

So let’s find a way to turn off the Ding when switching from one Messenger account to other, instead of pointing out it is another annoying FB app. Time better served if someone could at least try, instead discussing it is another app.

  • David Kaleky says:

How is Messenger not part of FB app? You hit messenger and it makes you dl this.

Maybe you could in spare time, see if you can figure it out. Sooo annoying. Thanks!!!

    • Ciprian Adrian Rusen says:

Messenger is a separate app from the Facebook app. Yes, it is integrated with Facebook, but not the same app.

  • Diana Ann Roe says:

David, unfortunately this guide is about the Facebook app, not the Facebook Messenger app. However, keep an eye on our website, cause we might create a guide about Facebook Messenger at some point.
And who knows? You might learn other useful tricks. 🙂
Sorry I can’t help more at this point.

  • Me says:

    Yeah, answer the one above

  • David Kaleky says:

Can not turn off the Ding when switching from one Messenger account to another. Is that possible? All else is off.

  • Aimee says:

Yessss so annoying! I grit my teeth also at people who leave keypads tones on when they type is so irritating! Thanks for this the settings are over complicated and even when you search ‘sounds’ nothing comes up!

  • Paul says:

Thanks, every time Facebook updates it resets this and it always escapes me how to turn it back off, that and auto playing videos with sound.
Baffles me how I can never remember, it’s almost like it resets my head to forget!

  • Glenda says:

    TOTALLY IRRITATING.
They have annoyed me and my partner who was trying to sleep. I do not need a soundtrack whilst looking at articles & accidentally scrolling onto a stupid noisy site. Turn them off Please

  • Evette says:

    Thanks very much.
I was going nuts trying to find it.
I appreciate you putting this out there
